Predicting the timing of the peak of the pubertal growth spurt in elite male youth soccer players
A final sample of 23 (from 28) adolescent male participants were selected from the academy of an English Premier League club. Anthropometric measures were collected across five playing seasons; age at PHV was estimated with Super-Imposition by Translation and Rotation (SITAR). The three protocols were compared based on measures at 13.0 years. Results and Conclusions: An age window based on predicted maturity offset did not improve estimation of P…

The Law of Retail Gravitation
The law of retail gravitation (LRG) and the economic law of market areas (LMA) both seek to define the market-area boundary between two competing centres. Each law is reviewed and then characterised in terms of the principal dimensions of the market-area boundary. It is shown that under certain conditions the two laws correspond exactly, so that the LMA is able to lend some economic support for the LRG. If, however, approximate correspondence bet…
Aspects of the Lognormal Function in the Analysis of Regional Population Distribution
The spatial structure of population within a metropolitan-area-based region is approached via the population density function, in much the same way as has been undertaken for a city or metropolitan area. A particularly appropriate form of the density function is the lognormal, and the broad features of this function are outlined. The concern in the balance of the paper is with certain properties of the lognormal form. These properties are descrip…
The Tinbergen Analysis of an Urban System and Alternative Approaches
The income model proposed by Tinbergen, which is concerned with the size distribution of centres within an urban system, is outlined in the context of a closed region. The main features of the Tinbergen model, including the balance-of-payments equilibrium, are then applied to an urban system with a fundamentally different spatial structure and distinct pattern of trade flows. It is demonstrated that the size distribution of centres within this al…
Temporal Change in a Central-Place System
A serious deficiency in the development of central-place theory has been the general lack of any systematic treatment of the question of temporal change. This deficiency has undoubtedly impaired the usefulness of central-place theory in the analysis of urban systems. In this paper three broad categories of temporal change in a central-place system are identified. One such category involves changes in the structure of the hierarchy. These consist …
The Analysis of Regional Structure
Regional Economic Change and Regional Spatial Structure
This paper explores some of the possible links that exist between regional economic change and regional spatial structure. The nature and significance of these links are discussed and three familiar examples from regional planning are used to illustrate the argument. These examples involve the regional reorganisation of service provision, the emergence of a depressed-area problem, and the trend toward metropolitan decentralisation (regional decon…
