  • Beneficial and harmful addictions

    Open Access•Rafael Lopez•ARTICLE•Lecturas de Economía•2016•References: 8

In this paper we obtain an isomorphism between harmful and beneficial addictions in a discrete-time binary choice context. The equivalence thus established allows us to study both phenomena (harmful and beneficial addictions) as two sides of the same coin. Besides the theoretical insight it provides, this dualism is also particularly useful because it readily allows for the translation of the results obtained in the domain of harmful addictions t…

  • Addiction and Self-Control

    Open Access•Rafael Lopez, Rafael Marín López•ARTICLE•Revista Desarrollo y Sociedad•2006

In their model of addiction, O’Donoghue and Rabin obtain a counterintuitive result: a person that is fully aware of his self-control problems (sophisticate) is more prone to become addicted than one who is fully unaware (naïf). In this paper we show that this result arises from their particular equilibrium selection for the induced intra-personal game. We provide dominating Markov Perfect equilibria where the paradox vanishes and that seem more “…
