Centenary Paper
In his major works, such as the Florentine Codex and the Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España , Bernardino de Sahagún described the Aztec god, Tezcatlipoca, as the only invisible and impalpable supreme deity. This portrayal aimed to present Tezcatlipoca as a god with Christian-like attributes, but far different from other Indigenous deities. This essay, however, extensively challenges such a presentation of Tezcatlipoca by thoroughly exa…

Linguistic Delight Promotes Eating Right
The link between poor diet and poor health is well-known. Nevertheless, 90% of Americans are not meeting current dietary guidelines, avoiding nutrient dense foods like vegetables, and opting for high-calorie foods. One of the reasons for this behavior is that healthy options are often considered less enjoyable, compared with less healthy options. Addressing this issue, the current work tests the effectiveness of a novel approach to encourage cons…

The Europeanization of Prehispanic tradition
The Nahua wise men known as tlamatinime have been treated as core figures of Prehispanic indigenous culture in Mexico. Most scholars, basing their opinions heavily on the works of Bernardino de Sahagún (Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España, Coloquios y doctrina cristiana, and the Florentine Codex) portraying the tlamatinime as scholars, philosophers, scribes, poets, and physicians who reflected the advanced and highly civilized nature of…
Narratives of the nation in the Olympic opening ceremonies
This paper examines the ways in which nationalism and the narratives of the nation were constructed in the Olympic opening ceremonies in Beijing 2008 and London 2012. The ritual of the opening ceremony represents a concentration of features, qualities and messages that combine the local and global, the culturally specific and universal, in a complex production. Using textual analysis of the telecast of the above two opening ceremonies, the study …

Mestizaje and the Creation of Mexican National Literature
From the beginning of the twentieth century, numerous Mexican intellectuals attempted to construct a national identity through mestizaje, a mixture of indigenous and European races and cultures. In both historical research and artistic production, they focused on Prehispanic indigenous traditions as an essential part of Mexican national history. In this mestizo nationalism, however, Mexican intellectuals did not pay much attention to the original…

The Colonial Legacy in Ernesto Cardenal's Poetry
In his poetry, Cardenal presents the Aztecs as a symbol of evil due to their militarism and practice of human sacrifice, whule the two pre-Hispanie Mexican heroes, Quetzalcoatl and Nezahualcoyotl, symbolize righteousness because of their peaceful religious and civilized practices. Through this contrast among indigenous figures, Cardenal indirectly denounces contemporary social injustices committed by dictators and imperialists, and implies their …

A reinterpretation of Nahuatl poetics
The Nahuatl song-poems, in xochitl in cuicatl (flower song), have been interpreted by modern scholars as a unique expression of Nahuatl aesthetics and world view. Some songs discuss the origin and functions of song-poetry and of the poet, and they often deal with the ephemerality of human life. Because of these metaphysical characteristics, the Nahuatl songs, particularly those attributed to the Texcocan king Nezahualcoyotl (1402–1472), have been…

The ‘crisis’ of non‐performing loans
The recent problems of non‐performing loans in the Japanese financial services industry have raised the issue of the alleged ‘inefficiency’ of the Japanese financial sector. Of central concern in analyzing these problems are the role of the Ministry of Finance (MOF) in the regulation of the Japanese financial sector and the strengths and weaknesses of the Japanese paradigm of government‐business relationship, of which the MOF's supervision of the…
Picturing the Gulf War
Despite numerous commentaries on Gulf War reporting, there has been little systematic analysis of the visual depiction of the war. This study reports the findings of a visual content analysis of 1,104 war-related pictures appearing in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report during “Desert Storm.” The analysis indicates that a narrowly limited range of images, with a special emphasis on cataloguing military weaponry and technology, dominated …
