Near Vermeer: Edmund C. Tarbell's and John Sloan's Dutch Pictures
This article considers drawings and paintings made by the American artists Edmund Tarbell and John Sloan in relation to the art of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Claims about, interpretations of, and enthusiasm for ‘Dutch Pictures’ were prominent features of the transatlantic artworld in the years around 1900. Art critics, including George Moore, Charles Caffin, James Gibbons Huneker and Frank Jewett Mather, discussed the relationship be…
Chamber Pots and Gibson Girls: Clutter and Matter in John Sloan’s Graphic Art
In the New York City Life etchings of 1905–06 and in the satirical and occasionally scatological “distortions” of mass-market magazine covers and advertisements he began to make around the same time, John Sloan created an art invested in the materiality of bodies and things. These works satirize and set themselves against the trends in commercial illustration—and specifically Charles Dana Gibson’s famous Girl and her imitators—which defined the v…
The Bewhiskered Rustic, Turned Orator”: Robert Robinson’s Old Men, Politics, and the Saturday Evening Post
This article takes as its starting point an illustration of an angry, bearded, rustic old man made by Robert Robinson for the cover of the November 26, 1910, issue of the Saturday Evening Post. It locates this image within the idiom of comic-narrative commercial illustration that Robinson contributed to and that Norman Rockwell would eventually master, and in the wider context of a burgeoning mass visual culture that facilitated subtle allusions …
Sport and Spectatorship as Everyday Ritual in Ben Shahn's Painting and Photography
Ben Shahn's paintings and photographs of sport and spectatorship made during the 1930s form part of a cultural discourse concerned to explore social relationships and everyday life in America. The position of sport within this discourse is established through a discussion of Morris Kantor's ‘Baseball at Night' (1934), and through reference to contemporary statements and cultural histories of the period. Close attention to Shahn's documentary phot…
From back number aesthetics to new expression: James Gibbons Huneker's New Cosmopolis
James Gibbons Huneker was an influential cultural critic in the decades around 1900. His idiosyncratic style has lead to his work being somewhat overlooked. This article relates Huneker's collection of New York travel sketches, New Cosmopolis (1915), to other examples of literary impressionism, and specifically to the work of J.K. Huysmans, Stephen Crane and Henry James. It then argues that New Cosmopolis moves beyond the aestheticism and detache…

With the death of Rafael Altamira y Crevea in 1951 the Hispanic world mourned the end of a long career of an almost legendary prestige. Above all, his eminence as a historian stood out.
