Alfonso Reyes y el Brasil
There is no better way to ease into the Mexican mind than to read Alfonso Reyes’s Obras completas, a processual feast of chaos theory and quantum creation. Along with Antonio Caso and José Vasconcelos, Reyes formed part of the Ateneo de la Juventud, which between l906 and l914 tilted Mexico away from an older, restrictive Positivism toward a more open, humanistic frame of reference. Reyes had emerged as a poet and prose writer by l913, when he we…

A randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate whether Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an effective cognitive‐behavioral treatment for suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), would also be effective for drug‐dependent women with BPD when compared with treatment‐as‐usual (TAU) in the community. Subjects were randomly assigned to either DBT or TAU for a year of treatment. Subjects were assessed at 4, 8, and 12 mo…
The Latin Americans: Spirit and Ethos
Building on his previous work, The Public Man, the author identifies a pervasive attitude towards life that is common to all the Catholic countries of the Western Hemisphere. He focuses on various constants in its civil life and argues that Latin America is a dualistic society

History, Society, and the Popular Lyric in Mexico: A Study in Cultural Continuity

The Mexican Intellectual as Political Pundit, 1968-1976: The Case of Daníel Cosío Villegas
The period 1968-1976 in Mexico is characterized by an expanded cultural infrastructure and an acute expression of ideas with not inconsequential political ramifications. Such an intellectual configuration is one of the key elements in Mexican history, with periodic evidence available at least since the eighteenth century of ideological and educational movements that paralleled governmental reform or influenced a theory of state. The Roots of Lo Mexicano: Self and Society in Mexican Thought, 1900-1934
With the publication of Profile of Man and Culture in Mexico (1934) Samuel Ramos launched the modern search for Mexican national identity, shifting examination of that country's problems from a physical to a psychological plane. But Ramos' work crystallized a long inquiry into the meaning of Mexican civilization, discernible from the 1920s on. From 1900 to 1934 Mexicans made the difficult transition from a culture largely foreign in spirit to one…

Antecedents to Samuel Ramos: Mexicanist Thought in the 1920s
In the historiography of the philosophy of Mexican history and culture one of the begging questions has been the genesis of Samuel Ramos' bookEl perfil del hombre y la cultura en México(1934). Did this work, which shifted Mexican problems from a physical base to a psychological plane (Villegas, 1960: 135-136), spring full-blown or was it a reflection of attitudes shared by other intellectuals who defined a movement in the history of ideas? Ramos …
