A History of Argentina
At first glance, the English translation of Ezequiel Adamovsky's Historia de la Argentina: Biografía de un país; Desde la conquista española hasta nuestros días (2021) seems an odd choice for Duke University Press's Latin America in Translation / en Traducción / em Tradução series, joining an already rather crowded field of general histories of Argentina available in English by David Rock, Jonathan Brown, and Luis Alberto Romero (the latter anoth…
Quantifying Sexual Orientation Among Homeless and Unstably Housed Women in a Longitudinal Study
Sexual orientation has been linked to certain health conditions, and yet quantifying sexual orientation in longitudinal studies is challenging. This study examined different methods of accounting for sexual orientation in a cohort study of 300 homeless and unstably housed women followed every 6 months over 3 years. Altogether, 39.7% (n = 119) could be considered sexual minority at one or more time points based on identity and/or behavior; 16.3% (…

Gustavo Morello. The Catholic Church and Argentina’s Dirty War
In The Catholic Church and Argentina’s Dirty War, Gustavo Morello, a Jesuit sociologist from Argentina, attempts to provide a more nuanced interpretation of Argentina’s Catholic world during the 1976–1983 military dictatorship than previously found in other treatments of the subject. Scholars such as Emilio Mignone and journalists like Horacio Verbitsky have produced influential studies documenting the collaboration between the Catholic Church hi…
The Age of Youth in Argentina
In her book The Age of Youth in Argentina, Valeria Manzano studies youth as a social and cultural category from its first appearance in national debates with Juan Perón's establishment of the Unión de Estudiantes Secundarios through the subsequent explosion of secondary school and university enrollments under Arturo Frondizi and other democratically elected governments to the development of a nonconformist counterculture with the onset of the Jua…
Communications and Media in African History
This chapter examines how media technologies have constituted and transformed Africa’s multiple public spheres over the past two centuries. Exogenous and often ‘colonial’ in origin, print and electronic media have nonetheless induced new intellectual communities in which African actors played a determinative role. Knowledge and power had previously been tightly linked under the purview of precolonial elites. Colonial-era media transformed this re…
Forgotten Continent
In Forgotten Continent: The Battle for Latin America’s Soul, Michael Reid laments that Latin America currently holds a marginal position in global consciousness, ignored if not utterly “forgotten,” just as it experiences what he sees as a remarkable recovery from the legacy of debt, drugs, and dictatorship. A reporter for the British magazine The Economist, Reid has lived in and reported from Latin America for many years. He brings to the book mu…
Dar es Salaam. Histories from an Emerging African Metropolis
From its modest beginnings in the mid-19th century, Dar es Salaam has grown to become one of sub-Saharan Africa?s most important urban centres. A major political, economic and cultural hub, the city stood at the cutting edge of trends that transformed twentieth-century East Africa. Dar es Salaam has recently attracted the attention of a diverse, multi-disciplinary, range of scholars, making it currently one of the continent?s most studied urban c…
Mitos, paradojas y realidades en la Argentina peronista (1946-1955)
Economic nationalism was an integral part of Perón’s repertoire of populist politics. It remains one of the most enduring images of that era and among the most important of Perón’s legacies to Argentine political culture. In Mitos, paradojas y realidades, Noemí Girbal-Blacha demonstrates the extent to which Peronist discourse was often contradicted in practice. The Perón governments of the 1940s and 1950s did represent a rupture in Argentine econ…
