Playing God: A paradoxical dramaturgy
This article will explore a paradoxical dramaturgy. Last year I played Yahweh in a production entitled OT: Chronicles of the Old Testament . It was part of the 2007 Malthouse Theatre season in Melbourne, and directed by Christian Leavesley and Phil Rolfe. To embody Yahweh is to make manifest the divine, make material the ineffable, and yet allow the illusion that all is still spirit. How does one become God, if only for a moment? Well, for at lea…
Performing Society
In this article I introduce and summarize Alexander's theory of social events as performance and ask what it offers performance studies. I critique the theory as being grounded in a theatre dramaturgy of actors, characters and scripts and suggest that while it appears to open new theoretical ground to deal with performances, it omits crucial features, namely embodiment, creativity and imagination. I distinguish between the cultural category perfo…
Vernacular Shift: Language and the Built Environment in Bastimentos, Panama
This article examines the connection between language shift and architectural shift in the Panamanian village of Old Bank on the Western Caribbean island of Bastimentos. The process of shift from Creole vernacular forms—both linguistic and architectural—to “prestigious” Panamanian forms is analyzed through an ethnographic lens focused on the spatial coordinates of social interaction. Language choice and the restructuring of communicative practice…

Telecommunications in the Year 2000: National and International Perspectives
In the past couple of years there have been few subjects which have generated as much literature and as little clear understanding as telecommunications. One of the biggest problems faced by scholars attempting to understand the field is the absolute magnitude of the subject. The technological developments, the applications, the issues, the problems and the potentials frustrate comprehensive description and analysis because of a scope which can, …

The Political Agendas of Three Newspapers and City Governments
The political power of writers has been suspect for a long time. The record goes back at least as far as Plato. In The Republic, he tells us the authorities will always have to control poets and dramatists carefully. Otherwise, they will soon lead the common people out of the paths of goodness and mercy laid down by their betters. The Lord Chamberlain of England was specially charged with keeping a close eye on the likes of Christopher Marlowe an…
