Nature, Culture, and Race in Colonial Cuba
From Colonial Cuba to Madrid: Litigating Collective Freedom and Native Rights in the Spanish Empire, 1780–1814
From Colonial Cuba to Madrid examines the largest and most complex freedom suit litigated in the highest court of the Spanish empire at the end of the eighteenth century. Filed by hundreds of re-enslaved Afro descendant people who had lived in quasi-freedom in eastern Cuba for more than a century, this action drew on local customary practices and broader cultural, political, and legal discourses rooted in the Spanish Atlantic world to put forward…

Race in Cuba: Essays on the Revolution and Racial Inequality
Is there a Cuban racial problem? This charged question opens up one of the essays in Esteban Morales Domínguez's book Race in Cuba: Essays on the Revolution and Racial Inequality (p. 87). The author is a noted scholar and one of the most prominent black advocates for racial equality in Cuba today. His short answer to the question is a categorical “yes,” an unusual position that he expounds in 11 short essays and 3 interviews collected in this boo…
Cuba: The Next Revolution
The Black in Latin America series is a testimony to the tremendous growth that the scholarly work on race in Latin America has undergone in the last 25 years. In the case of Cuba, it no longer seem
Reading and Language Beliefs and Practices of Latino/a Children in a Border Colonia
This qualitative study examines the literacy and language beliefs and practices of 28 Latino/a children from Grades 1–7 in a South Texas colonia, or unincorporated area. Instruments included staff surveys and participating children's 24-hr reading logs, interviews, and participant observations. The children had limited access to books, mostly during the summer, and most reported having negative attitudes toward reading. They also showed a prefere…
Language Shift in the United States and Foreign-Born Older Mexican Heritage Individuals: Co-ethnic Context for Language Resistance
In this study, we investigate individual-level language shift in a population of Mexican origin Latinos/as aged 65 and up. By using data from the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly, we investigate their English language use as the dependent variable in a hierarchical linear model. The microlevel independent continuous variable is their level of contact with “Anglos”; the macrolevel continuous independent v…

Beyond Tannenbaum
After several decades of intellectual labor invested in the Tannenbaum debate—a long and exhausting controversy well summarized in the first part of Alejandro de la Fuente's article—I am wary at the prospect of opening a new round of this “many-headed-hydra” debate. Aside from the conceptual limitations of the (overly ambitious) thesis and the reins it can impose on fresh formulations of research agendas, there are other reasons why it may be wis…
The Virgin, the King, and the Royal Slaves of El Cobre: Negotiating Freedom in Colonial Cuba, 1670-1780
This book tells the extraordinary story of a village of peasants and miners in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Cuba who were slaves belonging to the king of Spain and whose local patroness was a miraculous image of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre. In reconstructing this history, the book reveals that in Cuba’s eastern region, slavery to the King became a very ambiguous form of slavery that evolved into forms of freedom unprecedented in…
Fat distribution in Cuban infants
Fatness and relative fat distribution of 505 infants from the city of Havana were identified by principal components analysis of four skinfolds. The first principal component accounts for 59–62% of the variance and represents overall fatness; the other components contrast trunk‐extremity and upper‐lower body fat. Principal component scores were also correlated with different anthropometric variables. Estimated fat areas and an energy/protein inde…
The Satiric Penny Press for Workers in Mexico, 1900–1910: A Case Study in the Politicisation of Popular Culture
In 1908 an editorial in El Diablito Rojo , itself a penny journal, made some disparaging, yet revealing, remarks regarding the impact of the penny press of the time on Mexican workers: There is hardly a worker in Mexico [today] who every morning does not bring to his workshop or leave at home the paper of the day in addition to the small papers dedicated to workers which he acquires with real pleasure. In the big paper [the worker] looks for the …
