  • Eva Perón

    Gregory Hammond•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2013

When writing a new biography about a well-studied individual, one must always explain why a new study of the subject is necessary. This is a question that Loris Zanatta tackles immediately in the introduction to her new political biography of Eva Perón. She lays out two reasons justifying her new work: first, that there are still many stories to be told about Perón beyond what is already well known; and second, that Perón is useful as a starting …

  • The New Cultural History of Peronism

    Gregory Hammond•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2011

Peronism, as scholars of Argentina’s most profound political movement readily acknowledge, is one of the most thoroughly examined topics in Latin American history. Scholars have been fascinated not only by the enduring legacy of Juan and Evita Perón in Argentina, but also the manner in which Peronism seems to embody some deeper character of all of Latin America. Peronism signifies more than changes in the “rules of the game” in the economic and p…

  • El día que se inventó el peronismo

    Gregory Hammond•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2010

There are few events in the history of Argentina that have been more studied than those of Juan Perón’s dramatic release from prison on October 17, 1945. This is hardly surprising, given the significance of that date to the rise of Peronism and the carefully crafted self-image that Juan and Evita Perón molded over the following years. Any new work on the subject requires particular attention to the existing historiography and a careful articulati…

  • Suffrage in San Juan

    Open Access•Gregory Hammond•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The 1927 reform of the Constitution of San Juan province, Argentina, contained a variety of innovative reforms that set a precedent for later national events. Of these, one of the most unusual was the provision for female participation in provincial elections. The authorisation of this right, which preceded the national suffrage law by twenty years, came about as a consequence of local and national circumstances. The fundamental conditions for su…

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the transmission dynamics of chlamydia and gonorrhea in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and to assess implications for control programs. METHODS: Chlamydia and gonorrhea surveillance case reports (1988 through 1995) and contact-tracing reports (1991 through 1995) were examined. RESULTS: High incidence rates of both chlamydia and gonorrhea clustered in geographic core areas characterize…
