  • The SEC Spanish Consortium: Foundations for Linguistic Gratuity and Language Documentation Among Latinx Populations in New Destination Communities of the U.S. South

Open Access•Stephen Fafula, Chad Howe et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2024•References: 45

Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered …

  • Restructuring a Beginner Language Program: A Quantitative Analysis of Face-To-Face versus Flipped-Blended Spanish Instruction

Nieves Moreno, Nina Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Hispania•2020

The present study provides empirical data measuring the effects of a flipped and blended course design for beginning-level Spanish on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, compared to a control group following a traditional present-practice-produce instructional format. The study provides a template for the successful restructuring of language programs through the incorporation of a cognitive model of learning processes, c…

  • Broken Promises of Capitalism's Wonderland: Representing Uneven Development in Contemporary China and Japan

    Open Access•Fernando Ortiz-Moya, Nieves Moreno•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2020•References: 37

China and Japan are currently in opposing stages of the expansion process of capitalism. While China is at the centre of the global accumulation of surplus capital through urbanisation and industrial expansion-i.e. the creation stage-Japan has been stagnant in recent decades and its periphery is de-urbanising-i.e. the destruction stage. Consequences of the global spatialisation of capital, however, are similar in both cases, resulting in growing …

  • Multisite Replication in Second Language Acquisition Research: Attention to Form During Listening and Reading Comprehension

    Open Access•Kara Morgan‐short, Emma Marsden et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2018•Cited by: 15•References: 52

We conducted a multisite replication study with aspects of preregistration in order to explore the feasibility of such an approach in second language (L2) research. To this end, we addressed open questions in a line of research that has examined whether having learners attend to form while reading or listening to a L2 passage interferes with comprehension. Our results are consistent with findings from the specific paradigm that we replicated in t…

  • The incredible shrinking Japan: Cinematic representations of urban decline

    Fernando Ortiz-Moya, Nieves Moreno•ARTICLE•City•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Growth and shrinkage are two sides of the same coin—global restructuring of the capital that produces geographies of unequal urban development. This new reality goes beyond the attention of academics and policymakers, and is becoming a common narrative in Japanese cinema. This paper explores how Japanese contemporary filmmakers portray the problems associated with shrinkage, such as urban decay or the social and economic restructuring processes i…

  • Filming industrial Japan: Kitakyushu, rise and decline of the iron town

    Open Access•Fernando Ortiz-Moya, Nieves Moreno•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2015•Cited by: 4

This paper investigates how cinema has represented the two sides of the industrial expansion and contraction process in the context of a peripheral shrinking region. It explores how the cinematic vision of regions helps one to understand the processes of spatial development that resulted from socio-economic changes. Classic and contemporary filmmakers have shown the social problems associated with industrialization as well as deindustrialization.…

  • Wading Through the World of Wikis: An Analysis of Three Wiki Projects

    Open Access•Lara Ducate, Lara C Ducate et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 38

With the increasing popularity of Web 2.0 tools, it only follows that these technologies are adapted to our foreign language classroom practices. Research shows their numerous advantages as participatory tools that foster communication and collaboration. This study focuses on one such tool, the wiki, and describes the implementation of three different wiki projects (micropedia, branching story, and pre-reading) in three university intermediate fo…

  • Attention to Form and Meaning Revisited

    Open Access•Ronald P Leow, Hui‐chen Hsieh et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 34

The present study revisited the issue of simultaneous attention to form and meaning from a methodological perspective that addressed several potential methodological issues of previous research in this strand of inquiry. Seventy-two second-semester-level participants were randomly assigned to one of five experimental groups, including a control, and requested to read a Spanish text and also circle one of four targeted forms (10 occurrences each) …
