  • Redeeming La Raza: Transborder Modernity, Race, Respectability, and Rights

    Open Access•Abraham Hoffman•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2022•Cited by: 1

This important book explores the transborder history of Mexican-U.S. relations in the early twentieth century. More specifically, Gabriela González examines the connections between Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, focusing on activists living in those cities during the Mexican Revolution and through the 1930s. Mexicans in this period, and Mexican Americans (the latter referred to as “Mexican-origin” in the book…

  • Jews on the Frontier: Religion and Mobility in Nineteenth-Century America

    Abraham Hoffman•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2018

Shari Rabin offers an unusual path to examine nineteenth-century Jewish migration to the United States. Factors involving the difficult decision to leave home could include religious persecution, economic hardship, and a desire for adventure. Rabin stresses the idea of mobility—the opportunity to leave Europe and go to a new land where old-country restrictions did not apply. This sense of mobility allowed Jews to do more than settle along the U.S…

  • Heavy Ground: William Mulholland and the St. Francis Dam Disaster. By Norris Hundley Jr. and Donald C. Jackson

    Abraham Hoffman•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2017

On March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam in the Santa Clara River Valley north of Los Angeles collapsed with 12 billion gallons of water creating a tsunami of death and destruction on its way to the Pacific Ocean. The flood killed an estimated 400-450 people and devastated the landscape. Except for the pioneering work of Charles Outland, few historians have conducted in-depth research into the causes and consequences of this tragedy. In recent year…

California's agricultural history encompasses complex issues involving growers and farmers and their organizations pitted against laborers and labor unions; exploitation of documented and undocumented braceros; overt racism; and water rights defenders versus environmental advocates. Sarah D. Wald examines those themes by evaluating the arguments in writings examining them. She discusses famous (and equally notorious or obscure) authors from the G…

  • Golden Rules: The Origins of California Water Law in the Gold Rush. By Mark Kanazawa

    Abraham Hoffman•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2016

Mark Kanazawa wears at least three hats in his assessment of the relationship of mining and water in gold rush California. Narrative historians’ eyes will likely glance over Kanazawa’s introduction and first chapter dealing with economic theory, but succeeding chapters will be eye-openers, as the author digs into the complexities of what it meant to be involved in the gold rush. Prospecting evolved from the familiar individual prospector panning …
