  • Cuba Dreaming: On a Park Bench in Havana with John Lennon

    Open Access•Donald W Bray, Marjorie Woodford Bray•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2005

In Havana a fit place to sit and reflect on the revolution is on the park bench next to the sitting statue of John Lennon. A society like the one he imagined is taking shape in the Cuban archipelago. The academic and popular discussion of Cuba in the United States mostly misses the key point: the revolution is achieving a new form of democracy based upon shared social goals. These priorities were enunciated during the 1959 political void left by …

  • A New Latin Americanist Pedagogy

    Open Access•Donald W Bray•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2004•References: 8

The social science study of Latin America has two essential components: and studies. Establishment studies generally assume that the United States is the model for the Western Hemisphere, except during certain historical moments when authoritarian systems are deemed better able to protect U.S. commercial interests. These studies assign to scholars a function of lawyering for elitist formulations of U.S. foreign policy. Relevant studies, in contra…

  • Beyond Neoliberal Globalization: Another World

Donald W Bray, Marjorie Woodford Bray•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2002•Cited by: 2

Globalization has become the predominant framework for the analysis of the world political economy. The literature is replete with telling criticism of the consequences of globalization controlled by neoliberal ideology, namely, social and economic injustice and despoliation of the environment. What needs to be done is to construct an alternative model of global change and to elaborate a political agenda for its implementation. Establishment theo…

  • Ethiopia: Discovery of a Revolution

    Open Access•Donald W Bray•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•1981

Despite its transcendent importance, the Ethiopian revolution has not been studied in depth. Scholarly attention has probably been inhibited by the unorthodox course of the revolution and by the troubling issues of Eritrea and the role of the Soviet Union. Ethiopia: Empire in Revolution is still the most comprehensive account in English. Marina and David Ottaway spent 1974 to 1976 in Ethiopia, she as a lecturer at Addis Ababa University and he as…

Shortly after the coup of 11 September 1973 in Chile, nine people came together in the Los Angeles area to express their outrage on film: Seven were students and teachers who had been in Chile, two were politically committed filmmakers. The product of this union was the fifty-five-minute documentary "Chile with Poems and Guns" which reached several thousand international viewers during the first year after its release. Twice aired on Los Angeles …

  • Latin-American Political Parties and Ideologies: An Overview

    Open Access•Donald W Bray•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•1967•Cited by: 1

In a majority of Latin-American countries the coup d'etat rather than the ballot is still the institutionalized mechanism for transferring political power. Some states, like Haiti and Paraguay, are clearly in the “prehistory” of modern political parties. Nevertheless, in the twentieth century the political party with a developed ideology has become a major feature of Latin-American political life

  • The Political Emergence of Arab-Chileans, 1952-1958

    Open Access•Donald W Bray•ARTICLE•Journal of Inter-American Studies•1962

In Enrique Bunster's satirical novel Un ángel para Chile, set in the year 2015, Turcos” hold sway in the Club de la Unión, traditionally the exclusive redoubt of Chile's upper class. In 2015, high and mighty Turcos place orders for wines carrying the names of present-day Arab-Chilean textile millionaires with waiters descended from presentday aristocratic wine-making families. Bunster's fanciful vision of future Chilean society takes what basis o…

CurrentUnited States publications accord fulsome praise to the policies recently adopted by Chile. Under President Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez the “string-bean republic” not only enjoys an administration of honesty and integrity, but is judged by many to be on the road to solving its major problems through the application of two of our most cherished principles: political democracy and free-enterprise capitalism. That Chile has chosen the patterns…
