  • Ist Pluralität von Wirklichkeitsdeutungen eine Gefahr für die freiheitlich-demokratische Gesellschaft?

    Open Access•Thomas Fischer•ARTICLE•Streit-Kultur•2025

  • A fatal flaw: Positive leadership style research creates causal illusions

Open Access•Thomas Fischer, Joerg Dietz et al.•ARTICLE•The Leadership Quarterly•2024

We argue and show empirically that constructs and measures of positive leadership styles, such as authentic, ethical, and servant leadership, are not veridical representations of leadership behaviors. Instead, these styles conflate behaviors with subjective evaluations of leaders. Labelling behaviors as, for example, “ethical” means evaluating leadership behaviors on positively valenced terms rather than describing these behaviors. Across four ex…

    Open Access•Thomas Fischer•ARTICLE•The Leadership Quarterly•2023

More and more scholars are expressing doubt about whether questionnaire-based and other human-rater-based forms of behavior measurement are trustworthy, even though many of these measures meet psychometric best practice standards. I identify a lack of behavioral counterfactuals as common yet avoidable underlying problem and the existence of behavioral counterfactuals as an overlooked validity criterion. When behavioral counterfactuals exist, vari…

  • Spatial inequality and housing in China

    Open Access•Thomas Fischer•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Economics•2023•References: 27

This paper investigates the evolution of inequality in China (1978–2015) through the lens of a dynamic spatial general equilibrium model with migration and capital formation. Due to an urban-rural income gap there is domestic migration from the rural to the urban areas which tends to reduce inequality. The resulting increase in urban house prices can, however, constitute an endogenous barrier to further urbanization. Increasing housing prices inc…

    Open Access•Thomas Fischer, René Riedl•ARTICLE•Behaviour and Information…•2022

Technological innovation has become critical for market survival for many companies in the era of digital transformation. However, the organisational perspective to constantly stay up-to-date with technological innovations can become strenuous on an individual level due to the need to constantly adapt to the demands of a permanently changing technological environment. Based on a large-scale online survey of employees in Germany (N = 1, 115), we i…

Over the past two decades, research on Cold War neutrality has advanced rapidly. With the declassification of important archival collections, the image of the four European “classic” neutrals—Austria, Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland—has changed considerably. New facets have emerged in the understanding of how neutrality functioned as a part of the Cold War international system. In particular, the importance and connections of neutrality's domest…

On 5 May 1969 Finland launched its famous initiative, which led to the opening of multilateral negotiations for the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE) three years later. To date there is widespread reasoning that the Finnish initiative was mainly an idea inspired by the Soviets. Based on new archival materials and interviews with contemporary witnesses, this article shows, however, that the Finns had their own good reasons t…

Thomas Fischer, Daniel Möckli•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Switzerland was in a unique place among European countries after World War II. Although situated in the center of Europe, it had not been attacked by Nazi Germany and therefore emerged from the war with a strong economy, stable political institutions, and social cohesion. The experience of World War II forged a collective identity different from that in other continental states. The Swiss had a deep emotional commitment to neutrality and a convic…

  • Rise and Decline of Latin American Dependency Theories

    Open Access•Walther L Bernecker, Thomas Fischer•ARTICLE•Itinerario•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 12

In order to understand the value of any theory, one has to know its origins and background. This is especially true of the various dependency theories, which have always been more than just ‘theories of theorists for theorists’. Dependency theories can only be understood against the background of Latin American politics in the 1960s. Taking this into account, there was an obvious connection between the Cuban Revolution on the one hand, and the un…

    Open Access•Thomas Fischer•ARTICLE•Itinerario•1996•References: 2

The development of Colombia's import/export economy was accompanied by numerous violent conflicts from the second half of the nineteenth century onward. Craftsmen were among those who fiercely opposed the model of ‘outward-looking development’ ( desarrollo hacia afuera ). With independence this group initially increased in number during the first half of the nineteenth century. Around 1870, their proportion of the gainfully employed male populati…

    Open Access•Thomas Fischer•ARTICLE•Anuario de Historia de América…•1997

The gold of Colombia (basically from Antioquia and north of Tolima) has been exported during the 19th century to the City of London in big quantities. Free-standing companies which had their head-quarters in London invested from the 1870 s in gold production. However, their success was quite modest. Only a few firms were able to pay annually high dividends. The explanation lays in the deficient evaluation of gold deposits, in poor abilities to ma…

Educational robotics proposes the use of robots as a teaching resource that enables inexperienced students to approach topics in fields unrelated to robotics. In recent years, these activities have grown substantially in elementary and secondary school classrooms and also in outreach experiences to interest students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) undergraduate programs. A key problem in educational robotics is providing a sa…
