Open Access•Anni Wang, A Ting Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Veterans Studies•2024

The purpose of this exploratory study was to explore whether gratitude is associated with the intention to dropout when accounting for academic adjustment and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among a sample of student veterans with disabilities. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, involving the participation of 129 student veterans with disabilities from a Hispanic Serving Institution in a Southwest state in the US. Descriptive s…

  • Cataloguing the Untranslatable

Open Access•Johannes Neurath, Jorge Antonio Reyes Valdez et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2024

Following Mexico's 2023 presidential decree protecting Indigenous sacred places, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) was tasked with creating a digital catalogue of place-beings for the Wixárika, Náayeri, O'dam, Audam and Mexicanero peoples. This project confronts fundamental epistemological tensions: Indigenous concepts of dynamic, relational ‘place-beings’ resist Western juridical categories of fixed ‘sacred sites’, while …

  • Las nociones o'dam de cuerpo y persona. Diálogo interrumpido entre el norte de México y la Amazonía peruana

Open Access•Antonio Reyes, Antonio Reyes Pérez•ARTICLE•1700-tal: Nordic Journal for…•2023

  • Well-Being, PTSD, College Adjustment in Student Veterans With and Without Disabilities

Open Access•Emre Umucu, Fong Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2022

We examined mediating effects of the pillars of well-being (i.e., positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) on the relationship between PTSD symptoms and college life adjustment for student veterans. We recruited 205 student veterans. Mediation analysis was conducted to test whether the pillars of well-being mediate the relationship between PTSD and college life adjustment. The results showed that positive emotion …

  • Spain vs. Catalonia

    Antonio Reyes•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 12

On October 1st, 2017 the Spanish government deployed the police in Catalonia to prevent people from voting in what the Spanish government considered an “illegal” referendum. The police actions resulted in 893 [1] reported unarmed citizens injured in an event described by some international media as a case of police brutality. This paper drags from Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) to analyze discourses of normalization embedded in journalist pract…

  • I, Trump

    Open Access•Antonio Reyes•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2020•Cited by: 8•References: 29

This paper contextualizes Donald Trump’s political “Message” (Lempert and Silverstein 2012) within the current anti-intellectualism phenomenon in the Post-Truth era. Trump’s Presidential Announcement Speech marks the beginning of the Trump era, as it introduces critical traits of his persona, message and political agenda to the general audience. From a Discourse Analysis approach, this paper considers Aristotelian modes of persuasion and the mult…

  • Virtual communities

    Antonio Reyes•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2018

This paper analyzes two settings of digital communication in which social actors participate, interact and engage differently within virtual communities. Online identities are interactionally and discursively constructed and this process defines differences in groupness, illustrating the nature of those online spaces. This study builds on the notion of Citizen Sociolinguistics, that is, ordinary people producing metacommentaries on language uses,…

  • Negotiating use, norm and authority in online language forums

    Antonio Reyes, J E Bonnin•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Language Planning•2016•References: 13

The acquisition of a particular language and its standard norms of use have been traditionally channeled through education, dictionaries and institutional publications, but more and more, the internet has become a recurrent platform to consult norms and rules, through different forms of electronically mediated communication in which language users discuss, define and re-construct the idea of standard language. This study (1) presents a platform t…

  • Bush, Obama

    Antonio Reyes•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 53

This paper, framed under the scope of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), explains social processes by analyzing discourse practices. It proposes (para)linguistic variables employed in the creation of (in)formality in discourse in relation to two Aristotelian persuasive modes: Ethos and Pathos (Kennedy 1991). These modes of persuasion reveal different ways to convey a political message in the current U.S. political scene. This paper compares the st…

  • Strategies of legitimization in political discourse

    Open Access•Antonio Reyes•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2011•Cited by: 129•References: 21

From an interdisciplinary framework anchored theoretically in Critical Discourse Analysis and using analytical tools from Systemic Functional Linguistics, this article accounts for a crucial use of language in society: the process of legitimization. This article explains specific linguistic ways in which language represents an instrument of control (Hodge and Kress, 1993: 6) and manifests symbolic power (Bourdieu, 2001) in discourse and society. …

  • Discursive strategies in Chavez's political discourse

    Antonio Reyes•ARTICLE•Critical Discourse Studies•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 23

I present a new theoretical model to analyze political speeches to account for discursive strategies. This innovative method systematically traces voices in political discourse and correlates their discursive goals with their linguistic and paralinguistic means of realization. I demonstrate, following Goffman's idea of footing, and Bakhtin's ideas of heteroglossia and double voicing, that the speaker's role can be consistently traced during a spe…
