  • Rural Land Concentration & Protected Areas

    Julia H Haggerty, Klaus Epstein et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Where agricultural land use and biodiversity conservation values overlap, conservation science has tended to focus on the challenges posed by land ownership fragmentation. However, the dynamics of land concentration also affect rural landscapes and economies upon which biodiversity conservation increasingly depends. In this study, we provide a methodological approach to measuring concentration using parcel-level data to generate a description of …

  • From Colony to Nation

Michael E Stone, Michael Stone•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2009

Anne Macpherson’s From Colony to Nation intends to recuperate the critical if not always consonant roles that working- and middle-class women played in labor organization, ethnic mobilization, and the forging of an antiracist, anticolonial, incipiently feminist nationalist movement in Belize (formerly British Honduras) during the six decades preceding independence in 1981. The author usefully situates these local struggles within the broader swee…

  • The Interpretation of Song of Songs in 4 Ezra

Michael E Stone, Michael Stone•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2007

The article deals with a passage of 4 Ezra that might well be an allegorical exegesis of Song of Songs. The usual allegory sees the bridegroom as God and the bride as Israel. 4 Ezra is contemporary with Rabbi Aqiba's statements on the allegory of Song of Songs, and is further evidence for the existence of allegorical interpretation. Yet it witnesses a different tradition of allegorical exegesis to the one usually found. This conclusion is compare…

  • Literature on Adam and Eve

Anderson Anderson, Michael E Stone et al.•BOOK•Literature on Adam and Eve•2000

For many centuries, the acts and destinies of the first-created human beings, Adam and Eve, have intrigued artists, story-tellers and theologians alike. This volume is a collection of articles on these traditions, written by some of the foremost scholars in the field. The volume consists of two parts. In the first part G.A. Anderson and M.E. Stone, close collaborators for years, have combined a number of studies on the rich variety of Adam and Ev…

  • Pseudepigraphic Perspectives: The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha in Light of the Dead Sea Scrolls

Esther G Chazon, Michael Stone et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Pseudepigraphic Perspectives: The…•1999

This volume of symposium papers examines the attribution of books to great figures in antiquity: Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Levi, Moses, Ezekiel, Daniel and others. The authors offer fine literary studies of these pseudepigraphical writings, assess the uses of pseudonymity and anonymity in the Dead Sea Scrolls and rabbinic literature, and explore the theological, social and historical implications of the different attributions and approaches. The cons…

  • Biblical Perspectives: Early Use and Interpretation of the Bible in Light of the Dead Sea Scrolls

Michael Stone, Esther G Chazon•EDITOR•BOOK•Biblical Perspectives: Early Use…•1998

This volume explores the use and interpretation of the Bible in the Dead Sea Scrolls and associated apocryphal, early Christian and rabbinic literature. Interpretive interests, techniques and traditions are examined in many types of ancient works: rewritten bibles, pseudepigrapha, legal codes, prayers, sapiential texts, admonitions and historical treatises. The authors highlight the contribution of the new finds from the Judean Desert to such maj…

  • Beautiful Flowers of the Maquiladora

Norma Iglesias Prieto, Gabrielle Winkler et al.•BOOK•Beautiful Flowers of the…•1997

Published originally as La flor mas bella de la maquiladora, this beautifully written book is based on interviews the author conducted with more than fifty Mexican women who work in the assembly plants along the U.S.-Mexico border. A descriptive analytic study conducted in the late 1970s, the book uses compelling testimonials to detail the struggles these women face. The experiences of women in maquiladoras are attracting increasing attention fro…

  • Opportunity Costs of Spotted Owl Management Options for British Columbia

    Michael Stone, Michael K Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 1

It is estimated that there are fewer than 100 pairs of northern spotted owls in Canada all located in the southwestern mainland of British Columbia. In 1986, the spotted owl was designated as an endangered species. A recovery plan was developed setting out six management options to stabilize spotted owl populations and eventually lead to an improvement in the status of the species. The purpose of the present paper is to report estimates of the op…

  • Fertility among Central American Refugees and Immigrants in Belize

Natalie Mo, Nancy Mo et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1993•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This study describes how international migration, including refugee status, affects both child spacing and awareness of and interest in family planning. Guatemalan, Salvadoran, and Belizean women with children under six years of age (n = 133) were interviewed in a survey conducted in 1989 in three settlements in Belize, Central America that have a high proportion of refugees and economic immigrants. Migration was characterized by women's national…

  • Some Remarks on the Textual Criticism of IV Ezra

    Open Access•Michael E Stone, Michael Stone•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1967

The student of IV Ezra is in the happy position of having a variety of versions at his disposal. The book exists in Latin, Syriac, Ethiopic, a number of complete and some fragmentary Arabic versions, Armenian, Georgian and even a fragmentary Coptic text. Yet, in spite of the number of versions, or perhaps because of it, the text of the book has remained the subject of considerable scholarly discussion. A critical review of the most recent theorie…

Issaverdens, from which this rendering differs at a number of points. A German translation based on three MSS was published by E. Preuschen. Since he offers neither an Armenian text nor any information at all about his MSS or their location, use has been made as far as possible of his transl…
