  • Caseloads, culture, and capacity

    Open Access•Adrian James, Carol Cox et al.•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Police detective functions in England and Wales are straining under converging pressures. Drawing on 45 semi-structured interviews with detectives across five police forces, this paper examines how rising caseloads, proliferating digital evidence, and attenuated supervisory support interact with the College of Policing’s (CoP) Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP). Although conceived to standardise and elevate investigative practice, mo…

  • On the Brink of Possibility

    Open Access•Richard Carr•ARTICLE•Commonwealth Essays and Studies•2022

Although many critics have emphasized the tragic and political dimension of Alexis Wright’s Carpentaria (2006), this article focuses on the novel’s use of humor and a comic structure in exploring Desperance, an isolated town in the North of Australia. An Indigenous narrator sets the humorous tone, conveying stories light and dark centered on the residents of Pricklebush, the Indigenous settlement on the fringe: their conflicts with each other; th…

  • Labour’s Neighbours

    Richard Carr•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•2022•References: 14

This article considers two overlapping phenomena: the huge popularity of the Australian soap opera Neighbours in Britain during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the failure of the Labour Party to mount a successful electoral challenge until the leadership of Tony Blair. It argues that Neighbours’ appeal—community focussed, friendly, classless, unthreatening, a mixed economy, and in some ways small ‘c’ conservative—was precisely the platform th…

  • Promoting Britain's fight

    Open Access•Bradley W Hart, Richard Carr•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2021

From October 1939 to March 1940, Conservative member of parliament Alfred Duff Cooper and his wife Diana toured the United States. Their public appearances drew thousands of audience members and provoked the ire of isolationists, but the true importance of the Coopers' tour lay in the conversations they undertook with prominent Americans. This article examines the controversy surrounding the Coopers' wartime tour of the U.S., the significance of …

  • Sterilization and the British Conservative party

    Open Access•Bradley W Hart, Richard Carr•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This article argues for a revised view of the British eugenic sterilization campaign, proposing that a failure to maximize the contemporary political terrain significantly contributed to its lack of legislative success. The Eugenics Society's unwillingness to alienate Labour or overtly to link sterilization to concerns articulated by Conservative M.P.s rendered it somewhat rudderless when, actually, it could have been attached to broader concerns…

  • Conservative veteran M.P.s and the ‘lost generation’ narrative after the First World War

    Open Access•Richard Carr•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2012•Cited by: 1

Using veterans of the First World War who became Conservative party M.P.s after 1918, this article re-examines the way the conflict was interpreted in post-1918 Britain. Pointing to the substantial numbers of men who fulfilled the above criteria (and how they used the conflict to reach such office) it illustrates one way in which the war was already being used as a significant political device before the more famous authors like Robert Graves beg…

  • The resolution of a paradox

    Open Access•Richard Carr, Richard A Carr•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2003

The Querelle des femmes was ultimately the victim of its own virulent antagonism. While humanism may have instilled a fresh vigour into the medieval polemic by uncovering new evidence culled from the Ancients and the Church Fathers, as well as from medical and legal sources, such arguments, far from convincing and converting, only strengthened uncompromising attitudes and soon lost the lustre of their novelty. Clearly the debate could not be reso…
