The Impact of Attentiveness Interventions on Survey Data
Social and behavioral science researchers who use survey data are vigilant about data quality, with an increasing emphasis on avoiding common method variance (CMV) and insufficient effort responding (IER). Each of these errors can inflate and deflate substantive relationships, and there are both a priori and post hoc means to address them. Yet, little research has investigated how both IER and CMV are affected with the use of these different proc…

"Josephine Gassman and Her "New Zealand Pickaninnies: Performing the Colonial Family
An intriguing, previously uncommented upon detail from the theatre archives suggests that US vaudeville star Josephine Gassman may have had New Zealand children performing in her “pickaninny chorus” in 1912: a description of the child performers as “New Zealanders.” Could these be Māori children? If not, why include such a detail? What are the cultural and performance studies implications of the potential inclusion of Māori in this uniquely Ameri…
Religion and the Composition of the Commissions of the Peace, 1547–1640
Between the Reformation and the Civil War, the crown and its ministers sought to ensure that the JPs who ran county governments would enforce religious policy. The composition of county commissions was adjusted to the religious complexion of the regime, so that justices were appointed or dismissed according to their opinions, Protestant or Catholic. There were some major purges under Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth, and frequent instability, but th…

Women and Politics in Early Modern England, 1450–1700, ed. James Daybell (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2004; pp. 268. £45). This collection follows a conference on the subject held at the University of Reading. Many of the fifteen essays deal with elite women, who acted in a broader sphere and left more evidence than other women. Barbara Harris follows up her earlier work on women and politics by describing the ways in which elite women maintained wide in…
Clergy JPS in England and Wales, 1590–1640
In the 1621 parliament members of the House of Commons clashed with the king over the issue of clergy as JPs: there were suggestions that no clergyman should sit as a JP, or that only bishops and deans should be appointed. Why were there complaints at that time, and were they justified? Was the nomination of clergy as justices an element in ‘the rise of clericalism’? This analysis of clergy JPs between 1590 and 1640 shows that they had been incre…

For love, money, or politics? A clandestine marriage and the Elizabethan court of Arches
The strange circumstances of the hasty clandestine wedding of Thomas Thynne and Maria Audley in 1594 raise questions about possible motives for it. He was the teenage heir to a rich Wiltshire gentleman, and she was a young attendant of Queen Elizabeth, but their families were divided by political faction. Private correspondence afterwards and contentious court of Arches proceedings lasting to 1601 reveal the tactics adopted on the one hand by her…
