Conflict, climate change and media: Special Issue Introduction
In January 2026, the Doomsday Clock shifted to 85 seconds to midnight, signalling that the world had entered an era of unprecedented and accelerating danger. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists identifies nuclear weapons, the misuse of information technologies, and climate change as among the most critical threats to planetary security. Taken together, these warnings expose a deeper truth: conflict, media, and climate change now form an intertw…
Convoys: The British Struggle against Napoleonic Europe and America
‘Annoyed Every Inch of Their Passage’: Admiral Lord Keith’s counter-invasion campaign, May 1803–August 1805
Defence against invasion is a prime Royal Navy task, but arguably the campaign of 1803 to 1805 has been overshadowed to the point of neglect. Here, Admiral Keith directed a detailed plan of defence which stretched from the harbour of Boulogne to the Thames estuary and encompassed craft from 74-gun ships of the line to oared boats owned and manned by civilian volunteers. This was supported by a network of communications that would give the governm…
A considerable portion of the defence of the Empire': Lisbon and victualling the royal navy during the French Revolutionary War, 1793-1802
Based on an assessment of primary archive material, this article casts new light on the implementation of a contractor-based victualling system to meet initial demands of the royal navy at Lisbon during 1793–6; and on the subsequent development of a more formal arrangement under an official representative of the victualling board, the agent victualler at Lisbon, to meet the needs of stationing the Mediterranean fleet there until its closure in 18…
Maritime Security and the Law of the Sea
Britain, Portugal and South America in the Napoleonic Wars: Alliances and Diplomacy in Economic Maritime Conflict
In the maelstrom of Napoleonic Europe, Britain remained defiant, resisting French imperial ambitions. This Anglo-French rivalry was, essentially, a politico-economic conflict for pre-eminence fought on a global scale and it reached a zenith in 1806-1808 with France's apparent dominance of Continental Europe. Britain reacted swiftly and decisively to implement maritime-based strategies to limit French military and commercial gains in Europe, while…
Sectoral shifts, employment specialization and the efficiency of matching: An analysis using UK regional data
Robson M. (2006) Sectoral shifts, employment specialization and the efficiency of matching: an analysis using UK regional data, Regional Studies 40, 743-754. Over the past 30 years, the industry composition of unemployment in the UK has been subject to considerable structural change, the degree of which has varied significantly across regions. This paper uses Lilien's index of sectoral shifts to document the incidence of structural change across …
Does Stricter Employment Protection Legislation Promote Self-employment
British intervention in Portugal, 1793-1808
In the summer of 1808 a British army was dispatched to Portugal with orders to expel French troops from Lisbon and then to defend the country against further attacks. Thus commenced a six-year commitment to the region. The history of British involvement in the Peninsular War is familiar to many through the works of William Napier, Charles Oman and Sir John Fortescue. However, a point often overlooked is that although the operation began with limi…
The Rise in Self-Employment Amongst U.K. Males
The Relative Earnings from Self and Paid Employment: A Time‐series Analysis for the UK
We investigate the determinants of variations in the reported relative earnings of self‐employed and paid‐employed workers in the United Kingdom, focusing in particular on the significant decline which has taken place since 1980. We find that the main factors behind this decline have been the rise in the rate of self‐employment itself and a reduction in the level of capital per self‐employed worker; effects which we associate with a decline in th…

Self‐employment and New Firm Formation
Much academic interest in the process of new firm formation has centered on the influence of so-called "push" and "pull" factors on formation activity, emphasizing their effect on the incentives for workers to enter self-employment. This paper investigates whether the stock of self-employed individuals can contribute independent evidence towards an explanation of the level of company incorporations in Great Britain. In doing so, it highlights the…
