  • “I don’t care what you like, when I look in the mirror, I need to be happy”: A qualitative study of hair-related positive body image

Open Access•Elly Anastasiades, Jennifer Todd et al.•ARTICLE•Body Image•2026

Hair is increasingly recognised as playing an important role in body image, yet research in this area has focused predominantly on dissatisfaction and appearance-related concern. As a result, little is known about what it means to have a positive relationship with one's hair, or how such experiences may be understood within broader conceptualisations of positive body image. The present study explored individuals' lived experiences of relating pos…

  • The relationship between infant pointing and language development: A meta-analytic review

Open Access•Elizabeth Kirk, Seamus Donnelly et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Review•2022

Infant pointing has long been identified as an important precursor and predictor of language development. Infants typically begin to produce index finger pointing around the time of their first birthday and previous research has shown that both the onset and the frequency of pointing can predict aspects of productive and receptive language. The current study used a multivariate meta-analytic approach to estimate the strength of the relationship b…

  • Women academics at Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges, 1939-69

    Open Access•Elizabeth Kirk, Elizabeth A Kirk•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2003

This article examines the relationship between female academics and domesticity at Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges between 1939 and 1969. Women scholars in particular have had to juggle the demands of pastoral care and research and the former often took priority, which meant that women lagged behind men in academic publications. The evidence shows that, even though the balance of power in academic appointments shifted dramatically from women …

  • The relationships among working memory, math anxiety, and performance.

Mark H Ashcraft, Elizabeth Kirk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experimental…•2001

Individuals with high math anxiety demonstrated smaller working memory spans, especially when assessed with a computation-based span task. This reduced working memory capacity led to a pronounced increase in reaction time and errors when mental addition was performed concurrently with a memory load task. The effects of the reduction also generalized to a working memory-intensive transformation task. Overall, the results demonstrated that an indiv…
