Salt, Protest and Public Health in Modern India
Introduction
Salt played a vital role in social, political, economic and cultural life in South Asia. This special issue brings together multiple perspectives on salt, highlighting its place in shaping state policies as well as popular responses in modern India. The present article introduces these perspectives in conversation with existing literature on salt. It attempts to view myriad ways in which colonialism manifested itself and was experienced through t…

Intelligible government’
At the beginning of a new reign it seems appropriate to re-assess the meaning of monarchy in modern Britain. The new King heads a fractured royal family, a divided nation, and a disaffected Commonwealth. How can we as scholars make sense of where the monarchy has been, and where it might be going? This article suggests a new scholarly approach is required. Through a critical analysis of three classic studies of monarchy: Walter Bagehot's The Engl…

Productive Aging Lifestyles
Frank Caro and colleagues’ foundational work set the stage for a broad and multifaceted productive aging (PA) literature. Recent PA research has focused on health benefits associated with work and volunteering, respectively. However, these activities are often assumed to have independent associations with health and wellbeing. Less clear is whether and in what ways older adults participate in productive engagement lifestyles including multiple ac…
Salt and the National Imaginary
This article looks at how Gandhi used the Dandi Salt Satyagraha as a site for imagining anti-colonial nationalism. We focus on the visual dimensions of the Salt March and the divergent ways in which it was reported in the illustrated press in 1930. Developing Sumathi Ramaswamy’s idea of the ‘ambulatory aesthetic’ (2020), we highlight how Gandhi created a personified protest. Moreover, he chose salt as a talismanic object, ubiquitous both temporal…
The Ungrudging Indian
This article investigates the long background to Mohandas K. Gandhi's choice of salt as a symbol of protest against British colonial rule. Arguably the largest of all the colonial monopolies in India, the salt tax had the smallest effect on the lives of Indians when compared with other forms of deprivation and inequality. How was the salt monopoly different from other kinds of extractive colonialism? Why did salt never become part of the lexicon …

Oxford University Press. 320 pp. £29.99 The BBC's centenary year of 2022 was a year like many others, full of highs and lows. The corporation won the ratings war over ITV, its success leveraged by its coverage of the diamond jubilee and then the funeral of the Queen. Tim Davie, the …
Populism
strafes the text of both books. Some wellplaced commentators argue that British governance would benefit from an enlargement of their numbers.Even if this idea was attractive in theory, it encounters an awkward practical obstacle if and when the politicians who choose the best-placed advisers are themselves bereft of common sense. The evidence presented here suggests that, since Brexit at least, the main activity of special advisers has been to plo…

Parliamentary Representation in Modern Britain
A series of recent books all attest to a revival of interest in the theory and practice of parliamentary representation in the modern era as a scholarly discipline. This review surveys eight different aspects of that history since the early nineteenth century: the spatial dimension of the Palace of Westminster; the comparative framework offered by the history of parliaments in Europe; ideas of parliamentary representation; the history of parliame…

The Bicentenary of Queen Victoria
The past year, 2019, was the bicentenary of the birth of Queen Victoria. Since 2001, the centenary of her death, much has changed in the scholarship about the British queen. Her own journals and correspondence are more available for researchers. European monarchies are now being taken seriously as historical topics. There is also less agreement about the Victorian era as a distinct period of study, leaving Victoria's own relationship with the era…

The Literary Turn in Chartist Studies
St Stephen's in War and Peace
This essay takes a new look at the destruction and the rebuilding of the house of commons during the 1940s. It argues that behind the home front bravado of the Palace of Westminster steadfastly enduring the blitz lay secret plans for rehousing MPs away from aerial bombardment, contingency scenarios that were then updated after 1945 in the event of attack on London by atomic weapons. The essay also suggests that threats to the security of parliame…

Brexit and the British Constitution
The Brexit referendum of 2016 brought a new concept to British politics, namely the ‘people’s will’, one that is seemingly at odds with conventional notions of parliamentary sovereignty, even a threat to its very existence. This article argues that although the device of the referendum is relatively new, the kind of popular control over Parliament and the executive that it invokes has long been a part of British politics. Ranging over 200 years, …

The dominion of history
In 1914 Britain lagged some way behind the U.S.A. and Germany in the development of historical research. Both at home and in the empire, the gentlemanly amateur tradition of history remained predominant. This article tells the story of what happened next: the rise of a generation of British-trained historians who went on to lead the expansion of historical research across the Commonwealth in the inter-war years. It is a story about the influence …

Currents of Radicalism
'Those who were originally called radicals and afterwards reformers, are called Chartists', declared Thomas Duncombe before Parliament in 1842, a comment which can be adapted for a later period and as a description of this collection of papers: 'those who were originally called Chartists were afterwards called Liberal and Labour activists'. In other words, the central argument of this book is that there was a substantial continuity in popular rad…

The Permeable World
Early modern travel writing that hyperbolically exaggerates the wonders of the new world diminishes the homeland by comparison and so disrupts the project of discursive nationalism. Richard Brome's play The Antipodes features a protagonist who is a Don Quixote figure gone mad from reading not romance but travel narratives. The play employs an interior play that stages a city called Anti-London, the carnivalesque and comic inversion of London prop…
