Global surveillance of trends in cancer survival 2000–14 (Concord-3)
BACKGROUND: In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. METHODS: CONCORD-3 includes individual records for 37·5 million patients diagnosed with cancer during the 15-year period 2000-14. Data were provided by 322 populatio…
Future changes to the intensity and frequency of short-duration extreme rainfall
Evidence that extreme rainfall intensity is increasing at the global scale has strengthened considerably in recent years. Research now indicates that the greatest increases are likely to occur in short-duration storms lasting less than a day, potentially leading to an increase in the magnitude and frequency of flash floods. This review examines the evidence for subdaily extreme rainfall intensification due to anthropogenic climate change and desc…
Problems with the Term and Concept of 'Abuse
This paper critically reflects on the Scottish Adult Support and Protection study (the ASP study), a research project conducted at a time when "adult protection" was understood in Scottish policies to be the professional response to "abuse". During the course of analysing the ASP study data, it became apparent that practitioners themselves did not necessarily construct "abuse" and "adult protection" concerns as coterminous categories. Some exampl…

The preterm prediction study
OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine the relationship between fetal fibronectin, short cervix, bacterial vaginosis, other traditional risk factors, and spontaneous preterm birth. METHODS: From 1992 through 1994, 2929 women were screened at the gestational age 22 to 24 weeks. RESULTS: The odds ratios for spontaneous preterm birth were highest for fetal fibronectin, followed by a short cervix and history of preterm birth. These factor…
