Comparing Methods for Estimating Demographics in Racially Polarized Voting Analyses
We consider the cascading effects of researcher decisions throughout the process of quantifying racially polarized voting (RPV). We contrast three methods of estimating precinct racial composition, Bayesian Improved Surname Geocoding (BISG), fully Bayesian BISG, and Citizen Voting Age Population (CVAP), and two algorithms for performing ecological inference (EI), King's EI and EI:RxC using eiCompare. Using data from two different elections we ide…

Life satisfaction and quality in Korean War veterans five decades after the war
BACKGROUND: Military service is considered to be a hidden variable underlying current knowledge about well-being in the elderly. This study aimed to examine life satisfaction and quality of life in Australia's surviving male Korean War veterans and a community comparison group, and to investigate any association with war deployment-related factors. METHODS: Participants completed a postal questionnaire which included the Life Satisfaction Scale, …
Canadian content regulations and the formation of a national scene
This article addresses the ongoing impact of Canadian Content Regulations as applied to commercial radio. While commercial broadcasters have repeatedly called for a relaxation of the regulations in response to the changing music industry, particularly the increased impact of the Internet, it is possible to demonstrate that the regulations have had a positive impact on Canadian listening habits. An examination of the 'national' charts provided by …
Prevalence, comorbidity, disability and service utilisation: Overview of the Australian National Mental Health Survey
BACKGROUND: Health planning should be based on data about prevalence, disability and services used. AIMS: To determine the prevalence of ICD-10 disorders and associated comorbidity, disability and service utilisation. METHOD: We surveyed a national probability sample of Australian households using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview and other measures. RESULTS: The sample size was 10 641 adults, response rate 78%. Close to 23% report…
The Sequence of the Human Genome
A 2.91-billion base pair (bp) consensus sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome was generated by the whole-genome shotgun sequencing method. The 14.8-billion bp DNA sequence was generated over 9 months from 27,271,853 high-quality sequence reads (5.11-fold coverage of the genome) from both ends of plasmid clones made from the DNA of five individuals. Two assembly strategies—a whole-genome assembly and a regional chromosome assembl…
Divalproex Loading in the Treatment of Cocaine Dependence
The current pilot project was designed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a loading dose of divalproex (DVPX) in subjects with cocaine dependence. Seventeen cocaine-dependent subjects were enrolled in an eight-week, open-label trial of 20 mg/kg/day DVPX. Subjects were seen weekly and urine drug screens were obtained at each visit. Over the eight-week trial, craving intensity and frequency as well as reported time using cocaine decreased s…
Mental Health and Desired Social Support: A Four-Wave Panel Study
The first aim of this study was to determine whether dissatisfaction with close (attachment) and less close (social integration) relationships was primarily reflected in desiring less or more social support. The second aim was to explore the temporal order of this association using latent variable LISREL analysis. Mental health was assessed by the-30-item General Health Questionnaire and desire for social support by the Interview Schedule for Soc…
Measuring social relationships The Interview Schedule for Social Interaction
SYNOPSIS It is generally recognized that social relationships occupy a central position in psychiatry. To examine the role of social relationships in the onset of minor psychiatric morbidity it is necessary to construct an instrument which will meet the need for a valid, reliable and comprehensive index of social relationships. Such an instrument has now been developed and used in a sample of the general population. The Interview Schedule for Soc…
The Social Network, Support and Neurosis: The Function of Attachment in Adult Life
The psychological function of the social network is considered in terms of attachment theory. Social bonds are proposed as essential for obtaining a commodity commonly but unsatisfactorily referred to as support. Requirements for this complex commodity can be discerned in a wide range of contexts. Examples considered are the evolutionary origin of the social network itself, the concept of psychosocial supplies, the distribution of neurosis in Wes…
