    Open Access•Christopher Pullen, Ieuan Franklin•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 26

This paper explores the work of regional NGO organisations in the UK that explicitly support LGBTQ + asylum claimants, framing the testimonials of both service providers and service users, in considering issues of co-presence, and imagined equality, that may be experienced between the parties. While framing the cultural and political environment at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, and critiquing citizenship as a purely hegemonic nationalistic c…

  • Grey matter/literature/area: Bucketfull of Brains, fanzine form and cultural formation

    Open Access•Ieuan Franklin•ARTICLE•Punk & Post Punk•2020

Having ceased publication in 2015, Bucketfull of Brains (aka BoB ), founded in 1979 by Nigel Cross, is prime candidate for the United Kingdom’s longest-running music fanzine. When Cross relinquished control of the zine in 1985 its identity changed, but it retained the ‘voice’ of a zine despite increasingly assuming the ‘look’ of a magazine. This liminal identity also extended to its transatlantic focus and its straddling of punk and psychedelic m…

    Open Access•Christopher Pullen, Ieuan Franklin•ARTICLE•Interactions Studies in…•2020

This article explores the advent of the ‘Undocuqueer’ movement, an activist social network that represents the life chances of undocumented queer youth migrants in the United States, arguing for acceptance, equality and integration, with a particular focus on needs for education. Ieuan Franklin•ARTICLE•Historical Journal Of Film Radio…•2019

This article examines Newfoundland radio during the period when Newfoundland was governed by a British-appointed Commission of Government (1934–1949), devoting particular attention to the political sensitivities and implications involved when one nation essentially assumed control of radio broadcasting in one of its dominions. The BBC had played the role of midwife in bringing the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland into being during the 193…

  • Precursor of Pride: The Pleasures and Aesthetics of Framed Youth

    Open Access•Ieuan Franklin•ARTICLE•Open Library of Humanities•2019•References: 11

This article explores the causal links between the 1983 Channel 4 documentary Framed Youth: Revenge of the Teenage Perverts and the feature film Pride (2014), via All Out: Dancing in Dulais (1986). It will be argued that Pride — the story of miners’ support group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) — would never have been made if it had not been for its precursors, with several members of LGSM having previously ‘cut their teeth’ in queer …

  • Talking Liberties: Framed Youth, Community Video and Channel 4’s Remit in Action

    Open Access•Ieuan Franklin•CHAPTER•Queer Youth and Media Cultures•2014

The collaborative documentary Framed Youth: Revenge of the Teenage Perverts (made in 1983, transmitted on Channel 4 in 1986) can be said to mark the emergence of gay and lesbian programming on Channel 4, which itself can be seen as a ‘product of the changing political discourses instituted by the new social movements’ (Arthurs 2004, p. 28). Jane Arthurs has cited Framed Youth as being exemplary of both Channel 4’s conscious policy to commission f…
