  • BBC Current Affairs Coverage of the 1981 Hunger Strike

    Open Access•Howard Smith•CHAPTER•Northern Ireland Question in…•1996

  • Seasonal Variation in Irish Suicidal Deaths

Open Access•Peter Reid, Howard Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

Lester (2) and Sanborn and S a n b r n ( 5 ) have shown that the suicidal deaths' rates for two different geographical locations in the United States display some evidence of Spring and Fall peaks. This study was an attempt to discover whether there are comparable patterns in the Republic of Ireland. That the statistical returns underestimate the 'true' suicide rate in Ireland seems fairly well established (3, 4) . However, Bruga and Walsh (1) co…

  • The introduction of venereal disease into Tahiti

    Howard Smith, Howard M Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•1975•Cited by: 1•References: 1

18th century and the discovery of Tahiti for the Europeans in 1767 added considerably to this cult. The early descriptions of an idyllic, primitive society, where presumably not even man was vile, were used as a measure of the shortcomings of European 'civilization', and it was but a short step from this to the suspicion that European influence could do nothing but corrupt such an earthly paradise.1 It is small wonder then that the argu ment as t…
