The Grand Union Alliance
Large-scale developments in London often have negative impacts on less well-off communities as they include: demolition of social-rented homes, low levels of new social-rented homes, over-development of luxury housing, loss of existing local industry and replacement of jobs, services and infrastructure that fail to meet the needs of existing low-income communities. However, residents, especially deprived or excluded working class communities, don…
Honors and Nursing
Background: The intertwining of honors within collegiate nursing education can be rewarding and challenging for students. This study examined why students enroll in honors, why students persist in honors, why some students withdraw from honors, and what resources are beneficial to honors success. Method: An online survey was sent to 130 nursing students enrolled in an honors program at one midwestern university. Results: Forty-six nursing student…

A Historical Sociology of the New Cultural Diplomacy
Imaginal action
This theoretical paper considers the fashion in which Jung's psychology radically challenges modern assumptions concerning the nature of subjectivity. With an eye for the clinical implications of Jung's late work, the author introduces the idea of imaginal action. In order to explain what is meant by this, the paper begins by exploring how Jung's thinking demonstrates an underlying bias towards introversion. It is argued that while Jung's interes…
Bridging worlds
Introducing the ‘participatory’ paradigm associated with the work of transpersonalists Richard Tarnas and Jorge Ferrer, the author outlines an approach to Jung's archetypal thinking that might offer a more adequate basis in which to ground a non‐reductive approach to practice. In order to demonstrate the relevance of this outlook at the present time, the author begins by examining recent debates concerning the nature of ‘truth’ in the clinical se…

Disadapting to the environmental crisis
Affirming the Contradiction
This paper explores the problem of reification as manifested in the fields of art and depth psychology. By considering C. G. Jung's interpretive strategy and contrasting this with the archetypal tradition's focus on image, the author seeks to outline and expand upon some of the theoretical tensions thus implied. It is suggested that the notion of reification is directly related to Jung's concept of the shadow, and that the minimizing of ego dynam…
Evolving attitudes
The significance of Jung's notion of synchronicity and its place in the wider scheme of his psychology is readily underestimated. In this paper, the author suggests that the shift heralded by the emergence of the synchronistic paradigm can be understood as a response to theoretical tensions that can be traced throughout Jung's career. These tensions are reflective of the Cartesian assumptions upon which Jung grounded his ideas about typology. By …

Physicalism, Supervenience and the Fundamental Level
We provide a formulation of physicalism, and show that this is to be favoured over alternative formulations. Much of the literature on physicalism assumes without argument that there is a fundamental level to reality, and we show that a consideration of the levels problem and its implications for physicalism tells in favour of the form of physicalism proposed here. Its key elements are, first, that the empirical and substantive part of physicalis…

The Contagiousness of Conflict
Elmer Eric Schattschneider (1892-1971) was one of the most distinguished US political scientists of his day but beyond an isolated footnote, his work rarely receives much attention today. This paper suggests that there is much in Schattschneider's work that deserves renewed attention. In 1960, Schattschneider published The Semisovereign People , a study of the transformation of US politics from a set of regional hegemonies to a genuinely national…
Political Studies and Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies has more to learn from Political Studies than Political Studies had to learn from Cultural Studies. In a recent issue of Politics (Vol 17, No 3), Finlayson and Martin argued that Political Studies should learn from the conceptions of ‘culture’ and ‘politics’ employed in Cultural Studies. This response reviews the development of Cultural Studies in order to elucidate its approach and argues that alternative approaches to the issue…
