  • From manual to machine: Assessing the efficacy of large language models in content analysis

Andrew Pilny, Kelly G Mcaninch et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research Reports•2024

This study compares the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) and human coders in predicting relational uncertainty from textual data. Employing various LLMs (gpt-4.0-turbo, gpt-3.5-turbo, Claude 2, llama7b-v2-chat, and llama13b-v2-chat), we found that these models perform comparably to human coders, with only minor differences in Mean Squared Error (MSE) values. However, not all LLMs performed equally, underscoring the importance of model …

  • Syllabus Sanctions: Controlling Language and Fairness as Antecedents to Students’ Psychological Reactance and Intent to Comply

Open Access•T Kody Frey, Kelsey Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2021

Psychological reactance theory (PRT) has helped explain students’ resistant behavior. Additionally, several studies have explored resistant student behaviors as a product of an instructor’s syllabus policies. To build upon this line of research, a 2 × 2 experiment was conducted manipulating controlling language (low, high) and fairness (fair, unfair) within a syllabus policy. To increase external validity, the page on which the policy was located…

  • Children's spirituality: Exploring spirituality in the lives of cancer survivors and a healthy comparison group

Open Access•Kelsey Moore, Victoria Talwar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2020•References: 27

This study found that children with a history of cancer had higher scores on certain measures of spirituality compared to their healthy peers. Health history was found to significantly moderate the relations among spirituality and outcome variables, such as depression and anxiety. Furthermore, parent-child dyadscancer had more highly correlated scores than parent-child dyadshealthy on both the Depression subscale and the Existential Well-Being su…

  • Using Supervised Machine Learning in Automated Content Analysis: An Example Using Relational Uncertainty

Andrew Pilny, Kelly G Mcaninch et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Methods and Measures•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The goal of this research is to make progress towards using supervised machine learning for automated content analysis dealing with complex interpretations of text. For Step 1, two humans coded a sub-sample of online forum posts for relational uncertainty. For Step 2, we evaluated reliability, in which we trained three different classifiers to learn from those subjective human interpretations. Reliability was established when two different metric…

  • Children's Spiritual Lives: The Development of a Children's Spirituality Measure

    Open Access•Kelsey Moore, Carlos Gomez-Garibello et al.•ARTICLE•Religions•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 22

Previous researchers who have studied children's spirituality have often used narrow measures that do not account for the rich spiritual experiences of children within a multi-faith context. In the current study, we describe the initial stages of development of a children's spirituality measure, in which items were derived from children's spiritual narratives. An exploratory factor analysis of the items revealed three main factors, including Comf…

  • Definitional ceremonies: Narrative practices for psychologists to inform interdisciplinary teams' understanding of children's spirituality in pediatric settings

Open Access•Kelsey Moore, Victoria Talwar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 43

In pediatric settings, parents and children often seek spiritual and religious support from their healthcare provider, as they try to find meaning in their illness. Narrative practices, such as definitional ceremonies, can provide a unique framework for psychologists to explore children's spirituality and its role in the midst of illness. In addition, definitional ceremonies can be used as a means for psychologists to inform interdisciplinary tea…

  • Canadian children’s perceptions of spirituality: Diverse voices

Kelsey Moore, Victoria Talwar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Children…•2012

Few researchers have explored children’s understandings of spirituality. Thus, Canadian children from different religious, spiritual and cultural backgrounds were asked open-ended questions concerning their spiritual thoughts, beliefs and experiences. Parents of participants completed a demographic questionnaire and reported children’s religious affiliation. Regardless of children’s religious background, six prominent themes emerged: (1) Positive…

  • Preadolescents’ gendered spiritual identities and self-regulation

Sandra Leanne Bosacki, Sandra Bosacki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2011

Research suggests that self-control or self-regulation may play a role in the connections among spirituality, health, well-being, and social behavior. Within the framework of social-cognitive developmental theory, we explore the question of how do children and adolescents learn to think of themselves as gendered and spiritual beings within the context of social and self-relationships, and learn to have control over their mental and social worlds?…
