Agglomeration dynamics and firm typologies in African port-industrial clusters: Evidence from the port of Tema, Ghana
Firm-level behaviour within port-industrial clusters shapes regional competitiveness, yet empirical evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa remains scarce. This study analyses how firms within the Port of Tema industrial cluster in Ghana engage with collaboration, resource access, and innovation dynamics, applying evolutionary, institutional, and network-relational perspectives. A cross-sectional survey of 278 firms within a 10-km radius of the port was…
Reimagining a Nexus Between Seaport and National Development: Sociotechnical Imaginaries of Ghana’s Port of Tema
This article explores the evolving sociotechnical imaginaries (STIs) shaping Ghana’s Port of Tema, revealing how national development goals and global trade imperatives intersect in African port governance. Through analysis of policy documents, media discourse, and interviews, it identifies four overlapping phases in the evolution of these imaginaries: the industrial gateway era, neoliberal globalization, the rise of a transshipment hub, and the …
To Explore or to Exploit? Opportunities, Dynamic Capabilities, and Performance of Maritime Enterprises in Ghana
This study investigates how the recognition and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities influence small business performance via interactions with firm-level innovation capability and learning orientation. We frame the study within the maritime-sector context and seek to contribute to the understanding of how the interplay between opportunity recognition, exploitation, innovation capability and learning orientation affects the entrepreneuri…
Keeping the Port of Tema afloat during Covid-19: Media responses to user informational and conversational needs
Two different media platforms played a key role in keeping Tema Port in Ghana afloat during the period immediately leading up to and during the three-week COVID-19 pandemic-related lockdown in late March–April of 2020. The one media platform, Eye on Port , is a weekly broadcast television show by the port’s authorities, which caters primarily to external commercial stakeholders of the port. The other platform is a closed WhatsApp forum used by st…
Tracing References: Re-dating and Interpreting Abel-Rémusat’s Chinese-French Dictionary Manuscript Dictionnaire chinois
This study presents answers to the question of how one dictionary can help us understand the implications for lexicography of limited access to other dictionaries. We carefully analyzed the microstructure and macrostructure of Abel-Rémusat’s Chinese-French dictionary manuscript Dictionnaire chinois dated 1808 by systematically tracing the references noted at each entry in the dictionary. Based on his meticulous references to a large variety of Ch…
A remarkable compilation shift: A genealogical study of Medhurst’s Chinese and English Dictionary (1842-1843)
During his work on his Chinese and English Dictionary (1842-1843) Walter Henry Medhurst (1796-1857) dramatically changed his compilation strategy by shifting from depending almost exclusively on Robert Morrison's (1782-1834) Chinese-English dictionary, Zidian 字典 (1815-1823) to depending on multiple sources including Kangxi zidian 康熙字典 (1716), Morrison's Wuche yunfu 五車韻府 (1819-1820), and Medhurst's own A Dictionary of the Hok-këèn Dialect of the C…
Global Alumni Networks: The Inclusion of Fellow Experts from Developing Countries in Epistemic Communities
One significant and often overlooked outcome of technical assistance and overseas capacity development programmes is the inclusion of experts from developing countries in epistemic communities. The main argument of this article is that the formal network structure offered to alumni of Japanese technical assistance and capacity development programmes has provided experts from developing countries access to epistemic communities since the early 196…
Re-vitalizing an indigenous language: Dictionaries of Ainu languages in Japan, 1625–2013
The re-vitalization of indigenous languages depends on political and legal support and the implementation of language rights depends on knowledge of vocabulary and grammar structures of the individual languages. Throughout the nineteenth century world, compilers of dictionaries adapted indigenous languages to match standards defined in nation-building and, thereby, enabled latent possibilities for indigenous populations to re-vitalize their langu…
Practicing Kokugo: Teachers in Hokkaido and Okinawa Classrooms, 1895–1904
Professionally trained teachers shifted an ideological debate to a discussion of how to increase their students’ potential to navigate within new power structures of the Japanese nation and empire. While other scholars have described how many teachers opposed the idea of kokugo not least on the periphery of nation and empire, this essay analyzes concrete recommendations made by classroom teachers. I argue that teachers trained at the new normal s…

Aid Relationships in Asia: Exploring Ownership in Japanese and Nordic Aid
This book brings fresh perspectives into the debate on aid effectiveness and aid relationships. Asia provides a varied picture with its combination of rapidly developing countries where aid plays a less central role such as China, Vietnam, and Thailand as well as more aid dependent countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka and Mongolia
