  • Composite predicates in the layers of Latin

    Hannah Rosén•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin Linguistics•2020

The present study gives a comprehensive portrait of the accusatival-passival type of the composite-predicate (or support-verb) construction in the history of Latin. Taking stock of properties shows them to only minimally serve as a touchstone distinguishing between Latin composite predicates and syntagmatically identical verb + direct object constructs. The intricate issue of idiomaticity and the prospects of establishing its parameters are discu…

  • Quasi

    Open Access•Hannah Rosén, Donna Shalev•ARTICLE•Pallas•2017•References: 3

This study of two syntactic patterns (quasi + predicative future participles and quasi introducing actantial clauses) delineates the process through which they evolve, centering around juridical texts and drawing also on translated texts. The question of the Greek genesis of each of these two constructions is examined with special consideration of the distinct constraints for Lat. quasi vis-àvis those for Gr. ὡς, leading to disparate answers for …

  • Terror in the Heart of Freedom

Hannah Rosén•BOOK•Terror in the Heart of Freedom•2009

Gender and sexuality are at the center of the story of Reconstruction. The meaning of race in the antebellum southern United States was anchored in the racial exclusivity of slavery (coded as black) and full citizenship (coded as white as well as male). These traditional definitions of race were radically disrupted after emancipation, when citizenship was granted to all persons born in the United States and suffrage was extended to all men. Hannah…

  • The Latin Infinitivus Historicus Revisited

    Hannah Rosén•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•1995

Embarking upon yet another examination of the so-called Infinitivus Historicus [IH] (or 'descriptivus', 'adumbrativus', et sim ) appears not uncalled for this rather bizarre feature of Latin has been studied most extensively1), yet not altogether satisfactorily, and certainly not exhaustively We have to do here with a usage deeply rooted in the Latin literary language from Plautus onwards, until eventually becoming a literary convention, at the s…

  • Consignificare and Πpoʃʃhmainein

    Hannah Rosén•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1989•References: 6

Consignificare is used in Modistic writings to express both the concept of signifying only in context and that of signifying in addition to another element. This fusion of meanings, distinct and unassociated in the corresponding Greek terms of συσσημαίνειν and ποσσημαίνειν, had come about already in the sixth century, when - as is evident from Boethius' commentaries on Aristotle - προσσημαίνειν was radically reinterpreted: while it originally mea…
