  • Old Frisian Studies in the Seventeenth Century

    Open Access•Kees Dekker•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2024

The Bodleian library at Oxford is one of the most important repositories of manuscripts and early printed books documenting the study of Old Frisian in the seventeenth century. Together with primary texts, two copies of the incunable print of the Frisian land laws, Codex Aysma and transcripts of the now lost Codex Unia, the collection includes annotations and glossaries by three pioneers of Old Frisian philology: Franciscus Junius (1591–1677), Ja…

  • Evoke and A Thesaurus of Old English in the Old English Classroom

    Open Access•Kees Dekker•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2021

The use of Evoke and the Thesaurus of Old English ( TOE ) in the classroom at beginners’ level is not self-evident, since both are electronic tools designed to facilitate lexicological research for more advanced users. Nonetheless, there is an advantage in acquainting students with modern electronic tools allowing relevant, piecemeal investigations into the lexicon. This contribution focuses on the usage of Evoke in the classroom, suggesting the …

  • Jamieson’s Dictionary of Scots

    Kees Dekker•ARTICLE•English Studies•2014

The codification of a lexicon is not only an essential step in the standardisation of a language, but it also lays a corner stone to the foundation of cultural identity. Susan Rennie's monograph on

  • Aldred's Appetite for Encyclopaedic Knowledge

    Kees Dekker•ARTICLE•English Studies•2012

A series of encyclopaedic notes at the end of Durham, Cathedral Library, A.iv.19, includes a question on the origin of warm and cold breath immediately following a text listing the eight parts of which Adam was made. The two types of breath, made of fire and wind, respectively, form the spiritus . By linking the question on warm and cold breath to the history of octipartite Adam texts it has become clear that the spiritus relates to the Stoicπνεμ…

  • Bonaventura Vulcanius, Works and Networks

Hélène Cazes, Kasper Van Ommen et al.•BOOK•Bonaventura Vulcanius, Brugge…•2010

The last of the Renaissance humanists, Bonaventura Vulcanius, is still a mysterious figure, even though he left a correspondence, at least two Alba amicorum, and a collection of books and manuscripts. Born in Bruges in 1538, the son of a disciple of Erasmus, he spent the troubled decades of 1560 and 1570 in wanderings before his appointment in 1581 as a Professor for Greek and Latin Letters at the University of Leiden. He edited and translated ma…

  • Francis Junius (1591–1677)

    Open Access•Kees Dekker•ARTICLE•Anglo-Saxon England•2000•References: 6

In September 1890, Hendrik Logeman, professor of English and Germanic philology at the University of Ghent in Belgium, had the audacity to accuse no less a scholar than Henry Sweet of misleading his readers. Logeman based his accusation on an unfortunate remark Sweet had made in his edition of the Old English translation of Pope Gregory's Pastoral Care . For this scholarly edition, Sweet had wished to include the text of London, British Library, …
