The aim of this article is to make clear that, although men largely dominated the institutions of the Holy Roman Empire, beyond these constitutional institutions we can find many examples of women's agency. In particular, women of noble and princely families assumed political roles, both in relation to territories and to the empire as a whole. While it would not be correct to reinterpret the Holy Roman Empire as a “realm of ladies,” it seems clea…

  • Die den kaiserlichen hoff frequentierenden frauen bottschaffterinnen

    Katrin Keller•ARTICLE•Historische Anthropologie•2022

While women’s agency in the context of early modern diplomacy have recently come into focus, little attention has been paid to the fact that they were also involved in the system of European status competition. Using examples from Vienna and Rome, the paper shows that diplomatic ceremonial was by no means a ‘male affair’, as it has long been perceived. Rather, the wives of the House of Habsburg were an integral part of diplomatic ceremonial, as w…

That queens and empresses were crowned in the Holy Roman Empire from the High Middle Ages on, beginning with Adelheid in 962, is well established. The how and when of such coronations and also their contexts have tended to be relegated, however, to the marginalia of both older and more recent investigations of the history of the early modern Empire. Neither the lately intensified research on the early modern Holy Roman Empire nor the research eff…

Open Access•Axelle Chassagnette, Vincent Demont et al.•BOOK•Le Saint-Empire. Histoire sociale•2018

    Open Access•Katrin Keller, Marion Romberg•ARTICLE•The Medieval History Journal•2010•References: 1

Between 1630 and 1667 Cardinal Ernst Adalbert von Harrach wrote down—in Italian and German—various events of his life and thus documented the political and cultural development of his time. The result was a personal testimonial which is a singular specimen of historical writing in German speaking areas during this period, owing to its size, the diverse range of its contents and the specific circumstances of its origin. Over the last years, an int…
