  • Exploring non-archival trajectories of written artefacts

    Open Access•Markus Friedrich, Konrad Hirschler et al.•ARTICLE•Archival Science•2025•References: 3

Historians are biased. They tend to be strongly pro-archive, as archives, according to standard assumptions, enable their work.Archival silence is perceived as an existential threat to historical memory, since historians reconstruct the past from corpora of sources that are ideally well contextualised and interconnected.Historians hope for organised, intentional, and (at least theoretically) accessible record-keeping; based on that belief, modern …

  • Accommodation

    Open Access•Markus Friedrich•ARTICLE•Historical Interactions of…•2024

This essay discusses how (recent) historiography has framed key episodes of inter-religious encounters in the context of early modern and modern Catholic missionary history. It analyzes the genesis and implications of key concepts such as »accommodation« and »inculturation,« which are still used by scholars when describing earlier instances of Christian.

  • Constructing a Saint’s Life between Rome and the Provinces

    Open Access•Markus Friedrich•ARTICLE•Journal of Jesuit Studies•2023•References: 1

There is general agreement about the Jesuits’ alertness to media, their crucial role in early modern printing, and their engagement in promoting the sanctity of some of their members through print publication. Despite several efforts to establish central control, most of the Society’s media production remained decentralized. Moreover, there was no pre-conceived publication strategy of hagiographical activities. As a result, the production of hagi…

  • The Jesuits

    Markus Friedrich, John Noël Dillon•BOOK•Jesuits•2022

The most comprehensive and up-to-date exploration of one of the most important religious orders in the modern world Since its founding by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus—more commonly known as the Jesuits—has played a critical role in the events of modern history. From the Counter-Reformation to the ascent of Francis I as the first Jesuit pope, The Jesuits presents an intimate look at one of the most important religious orders no…

  • Impacts of highly automated vehicles on travel demand

Open Access•Jörg Sonnleitner, Markus Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Transportation•2022

Automated vehicles (AV) will change transport supply and influence travel demand. To evaluate those changes, existing travel demand models need to be extended. This paper presents ways of integrating characteristics of AV into traditional macroscopic travel demand models based on the four-step algorithm. It discusses two model extensions. The first extension allows incorporating impacts of AV on traffic flow performance by assigning specific pass…

  • Vehicle scheduling for on-demand vehicle fleets in macroscopic travel demand models

Open Access•Johann Hartleb, Markus Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Transportation•2022

The planning of on-demand services requires the formation of vehicle schedules consisting of service trips and empty trips. This paper presents an algorithm for building vehicle schedules that uses time-dependent demand matrices (= service trips) as input and determines time-dependent empty trip matrices and the number of required vehicles as a result. The presented approach is intended for long-term, strategic transport planning. For this purpos…

  • A modeling approach for matching ridesharing trips within macroscopic travel demand models

Open Access•Markus Friedrich, Maximilian Hartl et al.•ARTICLE•Transportation•2018

State of the art travel demand models for urban areas typically distinguish four or five main modes: walking, cycling, public transport and car. The mode car can be further split into car-driver and car-passenger. As the importance of ridesharing may increase in the coming years, ridesharing should be addressed as an additional sub or main mode in travel demand modeling. This requires an algorithm for matching the trips of suppliers (typically ca…

  • Government in India and Japan is different from government in Europe”

    Open Access•Markus Friedrich•ARTICLE•Journal of Jesuit Studies•2017•References: 1

This paper investigates the influence of geographical distance on the practices and concepts of Jesuit administration in the early modern period. It discusses in particular select letters by Alessandro Valignano from East Asia, to demonstrate how loyal Jesuits in the Far East asked for administrative adjustments in order to overcome the enormous infrastructural difficulties involved in upholding constant epistolary communication with Rome. Valign…

  • Genealogy as Archive-Driven Research Enterprise in Early Modern Europe

    Markus Friedrich•ARTICLE•Osiris•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 14

This essay approaches the history of data by looking at research practices of early modern genealogists. Genealogy was (and is) a data-intensive enterprise. It requires the accumulation, management, organization, and display of vast amounts of personal data reaching back many generations. While recent research has studied in detail the social and political functions of premodern genealogy, and while the staging of genealogical information for pur…

This paper addresses a topic that is not usually part of the history of historiography: technological developments. It starts from the obvious observation that historiography always takes place in a constantly changing and evolving environment of hardware, infrastructure, and machinery and argues that this environment significantly affects the methodological standards, research practices, and concepts of truth that guide historiography. One techn…
