  • ‘Together We Prepare a Feast, Each Person Stirring Up Memory’

Open Access•Ed Stevens, Anna Khlusova et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities•2023

Our story starts in April 2020, in the early stages of the UK’s first national COVID-19 lockdown. A multidisciplinary team of researchers and artists began a collaboration with Migrateful, a charity that runs cookery classes led by refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants struggling to integrate and access employment. Teaching classes and sharing their cuisine and stories helps the chefs develop their confidence and sense of belonging, and food is …

  • Politics of Knowledge Production in the Global Compact for Migration

Leonie Ansems De Vries, Katharine T Weatherhead•ARTICLE•Interventions•2021

This essay interrogates the production of knowledge about migration in a prominent UN instrument, the Global Compact for Migration (GCM). To articulate which worlds of mobility it privileges and delegitimises, we explore the GCM’s approach to “safe, orderly and regular” migration, particularly through its formulation of “information provision” for migrants. The politics of knowledge lies in producing both a conception of “safe, orderly and regula…

  • (Im)moral Borders in Practice

Nora El Qadim, Beste Işleyen et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2021•Citada por: 15•Referências: 58

This Forum aims to push existing debates in critical border and migration studies over the featuring of morals, ethics and rights in everyday practices relating to the governance of the mobility of non-citizen populations. Its contributors steer away from the actual evaluation or advocacy of the good/just/ethical, focusing instead on the sociological examination of morals and ethics in practice, i.e. how actors understand morally and ethically th…

  • The crafting of a paradox

Christina Oelgemöller, Leonie Ansems De Vries et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

There is now a large literature discussing ‘Fortress Europe’ and the character\nof the Schengen area, especially how it has established freedom of\nmovement inside at the expense of easy access from the outside. This article\nchallenges this metaphor by going back to the early negotiations around\nSchengen and shedding light on some of the concerns raised at the time\nregarding ‘compensatory measures’, the un/desirable and technological\nsolution…

  • Seeking refuge in Europe

Leonie Ansems De Vries, Elspeth Guild•ARTICLE•New Community•2019•Citada por: 68•Referências: 12

In the past few years, spaces of transit have become prominent sites for people seeking refuge in Europe. From railway stations and parks in European cities, to informal settlements around Calais, to the hotspots in Italy and Greece, the movements of people and the techniques that govern them are at the heart of what has been misnamed the ‘European refugee crisis’. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork, this article takes spaces of transit as a vantag…

  • Violent governance, identity and the production of legitimacy

    Open Access•Alexander L Curry, Alexander Curry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2018•Citada por: 2•Referências: 22

  • Collective Discussion

Leonie Ansems De Vries, Lerita M Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•International Political Sociology•2017•Referências: 19

This article engages in an experiment that aims to push critical/post-structuralist thought beyond its comfort zone. Despite its commitment to critiquing modern, liberal ontologies, the article claims that these same ontologies are often tacitly reproduced, resulting in a failure to grasp contemporary structures and histories of violence and domination. The article brings into conversation five selected critical scholars from a range of theoretic…

  • Politics of (in)visibility

    Open Access•Leonie Ansems De Vries•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2016•Citada por: 32•Referências: 15

This article explores the relationality of governance and resistance in the context of the constitution of refugee subjectivities in Malaysia. Whilst recognising their precarity, the article moves away from conceiving of refugees merely as victims subjected to violence and control, and to contribute to an emerging body of literature on migrant resistance. Its contribution lies in examining practices of resistance, and the specific context in whic…

  • Opposing the opposition? Binarity and complexity in political resistance

Open Access•Leonie Ansems De Vries, Doerthe Rosenow•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2015•Citada por: 8•Referências: 35

This article explores dimensions of political action that transgress the limitations of traditionally modern, opposition-focused conceptualisations. While there has been a turn to new non-oppositional ontologies in the last decades, there has been less exploration of what this could mean concretely for a political activism that aims to go beyond mere 'micropolitical' transformation. To address this lack, this article examines the tensions between…

  • Political Life beyond the Biopolitical

Open Access•Leonie Ansems De Vries•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2013

Michel Foucault's genealogy of the entry of life into politics provides an incisive account of the manner in which life came to be governed on the basis of its understood biological capacities and requirements. Foucault problematises biopolitics as a mode of governance through which life's potentialities are both produced and immobilised via the continuous (re)production of circulations, or the constitution of the milieu. The question is whether …

  • Hobbes, War, Movement

Leonie Ansems De Vries, Jörg Spieker•ARTICLE•Global Society•2009•Citada por: 2

While informed by Foucault's understanding of power in terms of war and circulation, this article challenges Foucault's static reading of Hobbes. Contextualising Hobbes's political thought within the scientific ideas that he was inspired by, this article reveals that there is more to Hobbes than the static, depoliticising image of the contract. Hobbes's political thought is premised upon an ontology of movement; that is, his account of political …

  • (The War On) Terrorism

Leonie Ansems De Vries•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2008•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Thinking back on the globally televised images of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in which two airplanes flew into the World Trade Center, one aircraft hit the Pentagon in Washington, and another one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, the questions “whose suicide?” and “the collapse of what?” appear unmistakably straightforward. Nineteen Islamic suicide bombers turned their deaths into weapons, causing the collapse of the World Trad…
