Artificial Intelligence as an Academic Ally: A Quality Improvement Initiative for a Graduate Evaluation Course
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has influenced evaluation and evaluation education. As AI tools become more common, educators must explore how they can enhance student learning, engagement, and accessibility, and prepare students well for professional work. While some faculty may hesitate to integrate AI, a constructive approach is to equip students to use AI ethically and effectively. This article describes how an instructo…
Re-encoding Glamour from Ghana to England: Illustrated Magazines, Gender Norms and Black Identities through the Lens of James Barnor (1950s–1980s)
How have gender and racial norms conveyed by illustrated magazines—whose circulation exploded in Africa in the 1960s—affected photographers’ local practices? And how, in turn, have they themselves generated this gendered visual order? This article aims to shed light on this two-fold question by proposing a diachronic analysis of the influence of models of femininity transmitted by the illustrated press on the visual imagination of a Ghanaian phot…

Old Scandals, New Memories: Mayanja’s Transformation in Buganda (18th-21st centuries)
A stuffed leopard more than a century old named Mayanja was destroyed on the 16th of March 2010 during the fire that raked Kasubi (Kampala, Uganda)—the royal tombs of the Kings of Buganda—listed among Unesco World heritage sites. Mayanja was a leopard, a god, a river with execution sites running through the heart of the kingdom of Buganda, a spirit, a prince and a twin born from royal incest. In Mayanja history is layered, with successive myths o…
Maritimes Dreieck: Chinas Aufstieg, Russlands Abstieg und die USA. China’s rise, Russia’s decline and the USA
China has taken over from Russia as the leading major maritime power behind the USA. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moscow has been unable to modernise and expand its deep-sea fleet. Even so, Russia still has respectable abilities to preserve its national security interests. And even in its relatively poor condition, the Russian navy is a model for China, which is increasingly projecting its global power and which in the foreseeable futu…

Half-Life Determination of 41 Ca and Some Other Radioisotopes
We have performed a new determination of the half-life of 41 Ca by measuring the specific activity of an enriched Ca material with known 41 Ca abundance. We measured the activity via the 3.3-keV X-rays emitted in the electron capture decay of 41 Ca, and the 41 Ca abundance was measured by low-energy mass spectrometry. The result, t 1/2 = (1.01 ± 0.10) × 10 5 yr, agrees with the recent ‘geological’ half-life of Klein et al., (1991), t 1/2 = (1.03 …
Studies Towards a Method for Radiocalcium Dating of Bones
We made preliminary AMS measurements of 41 Ca/Ca ratios in bone and limestone specimens with the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS). We were able to avoid pre-enrichment of 41 Ca used in previous experiments due to a substantial increase in Ca-beam intensity. Most of the measured ratios lie in the 10 -14 range, with a few values below 10 -14 . In general, these values are higher than the ones observed by the AMS group at the Universi…
Detection of the 36 Cl Radioisotope at the Rehovot 14UD Pelletron Accelerator
A program of accelerator mass spectrometry has been started at the Rehovot 14UD Pelletron Accelerator Laboratory. Part of the initial emphasis has been directed to the detection of the 36 Cl radioisotope. We report here on the present status of our work and describe our experimental system. Preliminary results are presented, showing that 36 Cl/Cl concentrations ranging down to 1×10 −14 could be measured with our system
Radioisotope Detection with the Argonne FN Tandem Accelerator
A standard heavy ion nuclear structure facility has been used to detect several long-lived radioisotopes by counting the accelerated ions. The problem of eliminating strong isobaric background beams has been solved by combining the energy loss dispersion through a uniform A l foil stack with the high momentum resolution of an Enge split-pole magnetic spectrograph. Radioisotope concentrations in the following ranges have been measured: 14 C/ 12 C …
