Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz’s State Visit to Britain (July 1867): A Case in Negotiated ‘Ornamental’ Diplomatic Gifts
This article examines gift-giving during Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz’s State visit to Britain in July 1867. An exceptional occasion in itself – for an Ottoman Sultan had never left his Empire in peacetime or ever would again –, the visit offers an interesting case for nuancing the generally accepted idea that gifts between equals (here rulers) are “free gifts”. The article makes a case for gift-giving in that particular context being a long and vex…
Introduction – The Narratives of Gifts: Agencies, Resignifications and Transmissions
A full century after Marcel Mauss’s Essai sur le don: forme et raison de l’échange dans les sociétés archaïques (1923-4), our critical understanding of gifts and counter-gifts has much evolved from a perspective that was primarily rooted in classical anthropology and a pacifist, post-World War I European context. As frequently commented on by critics of Mauss’s theory, imperialism and colonialism were largely left out of his analysis, while, as N…

Transnational Identities in Print: The Armenian-Language Press of France in a Global Perspective
To better understand the originality of the Armenian-language press of France, the introduction to this special issue situates this vast periodical output in its historical context, as well as in its natural theoretical background of allophone presses published throughout the world and in France. With its over 200 Armenian-language titles since 1855, including the exceptionally long-lasting daily Ḥaṛach (1925-2009), France has always been a centr…
Channelling Ottoman Armenian Refugees During the Hamidian Massacres: Immigration Restrictions and British Liberal Imperial Humanitarianism at Stake (1894–1898)
This article examines British refuge to Ottoman Armenians in the aftermath of the 1894–1897 Hamidian massacres, an episode absent from the historiography of Britain and refuge, and largely from historical refugee studies. Analysed against the backdrop of the restrictionist Aliens Bills (1894–1905), refuge offered by Britain to tens of thousands of Ottoman Armenians seems a contradiction in terms. This article seeks to go beyond this contradiction…
