  • Oscar Stanton DePriest: Republican Politics, the Strategy of Nonpartisanship, and the Struggle for Civil Rights

    Alison M Parker•ARTICLE•The Journal of African American…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Oscar Stanton DePriest was the first African American elected to the House of Representatives in the twentieth century and the first ever from the North. This article revises our understanding of DePriest as more than a notable “first” in so many realms and as more than just a product of Chicago’s notoriously corrupt urban party machine. The Illinois Republican served from 1929 to 1935 and practiced a nonpartisanship that put African Americans’ m…

    Open Access•Alison M Parker•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2019

William Kuby's Conjugal Misconduct discusses how the boundaries of conventional marriage were expanded or defied entirely in the twentieth-century United States. The book addresses exceptional coupling patterns, finding and identifying the broad array of marital nonconformity. None of these types of coupling were practiced by more than a small minority at the time, yet Kuby argues that they reveal the outer limits of coupling patterns. Paying mon…

Jacqueline Bacon explores how these activists, rather than surrender to a society intent on keeping them quiet, identified and employed rh…

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union's (WCTU) Department for the Promotion of Purity in Literature and Art, established in 1883, worked for legal censorship, but also created a "pure" literary, artistic, and popular culture. This WCTU program blurs the distinctions some historians have made between producers of culture and their audience(s) or, alternatively, between repressive censors and creative artists.
