Timothy Paul Bowman's Blood Oranges focuses on the establishment of the citrus-based economy in south Texas during the early twentieth century and how the ethnic Mexican population there became marginalized and exploited. The author's thesis is that “twentieth-century South Texas history unfolded the way it did because Anglo-Americans colonized the region after 1848” (p. 2). After briefly describing the Spanish settlement of the region, Bowman pl…

Growing Up Growing Sugar
The 1950s are often described as an anxious period in American history. Sometimes that anxiety was fed by fears about juvenile delinquency. In the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota, public apprehension was fueled also from an influx of Mexican people brought to the region by the rapidly expanding sugar beet industry. To address these perceived threats, state and local public officials, civic organizations, and the sugar industry laun…

The Franciscans in New Mexico, 1692-1754
Scholars who have studied the Franciscan effort in New Mexico during the Spanish colonial epoch have generally posited that the watershed event in the missionary program was the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Thus, the periodization for the Order's evangelical effort has been structured in two parts: pre-1680 and post-reconquest (1692-1821). One need only compare Fray Alonso de Benavides's glowing description of his brethren's work in the region in 1630 …
