It contains testimonies by Holocaust survivor children collected and put down in a notebook by their survivor teacher, Shlomo Tsam, in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust.     In 1946, Nuremberg's schools inspector Otto Barthel had local schoolchildren write essays on their wartime experiences. They were also asked to fill in questionnaires which specifically addressed their political attitudes. About 3,000 pupils submitted their work.     Jurek Becker's second novel, Irreführung der Behörden (1973), was received much less enthusiastically than his debut novel, Jakob der Lügner (1969). The story of young Gregor Bienek's metamorphosis from an ambitious writer of political satire struggling against East German censorship into a successful opportunist struck scholars and critics as a disappointing piece of popular fiction.     Schlaflose Tage marks a turning point for Jurek Becker: it is the only one of his novels which was never published in the GDR, and after its failure to gain authorisation in 1977, Becker left the GDR. The publishing negotiations concentrated on contentious elements of the fictional text, as well as on Becker's demands and his public demeanour.
