Classification and Fragmentation Under Communism
This article reexamines state-society relations in early 1950s China by analyzing the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) interactions with Shanghai’s private business community. Drawing on archival records and memoirs, it argues that the CCP did not merely tolerate private enterprise for pragmatic reasons but actively fragmented the business circle by its own needs and criteria. Entrepreneurs were classified and treated according to their political …
Perceiving changes in the Socialist Bloc
This article introduces Feiqing yanjiu [Studies of Bandit Communists], a little-used journal produced by Taiwan’s intelligence agency during the Cold War, as a valuable source for how the capitalist world interpreted policy shifts within the socialist bloc. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Taiwan’s mainland China analysts drew on publicly available Chinese Communist Party (CCP) materials to develop distinctive frameworks for interpreting early …

Drawing upon chimerism may help us broaden the concept of “artificial intelligence” into “synthetic cognition”—an approach that highlights the duality of “artificial” and “authentic”, amplifies non-human methods of cognition, and anticipates modes of symbiosis between imposed dichotomies. By subverting what one might consider natural, chimerism allows us to disentangle the “artificial” in artificial intelligence, and bring forward the notion of “…
Predicting academic achievement from the collaborative influences of executive function, physical fitness, and demographic factors among primary school students in China
Our results suggest that recognizing sex differences and emphasizing the simultaneous development of cognition and physical well-being can positively impact the academic development of primary school students. Ensemble learning methods warrant further attention, as they enable the establishment of an accurate academic early warning system for primary school students
Using interpretable machine learning methods to identify the relative importance of lifestyle factors for overweight and obesity in adults
Pooled evidence from two nationally representative studies suggests that recognizing demographic differences and emphasizing the relative importance of sedentary behavior, alcohol consumption, and protein intake are beneficial for managing body weight status in adults. The specific risk thresholds for lifestyle factors observed in this study can help inform and guide future research and public health actions

A Multi-Dimensional Contrastive Analysis on English Abstracts in Chinese Master’s Theses and International Core Journal Articles
As a signpost for the reader, the abstract contains the main body of a thesis and summarizes the most important information in an article. Word war during Patrick Hurley’s 1944 mission to China
This article explores the disparities that exist between the original English versions and the translated Chinese versions of Patrick Hurley’s ‘Five-Point Proposal’ and argues that by studying additional primary sources, these differences can reveal insights into the political manoeuvring of both parties on the verge of the Cold War and their efforts to mould their own historical accounts. By analysing all available versions of the proposal, the …
Generational politics
Following the takeover of Shanghai, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) used ‘generation’ as a key regulatory technique to mold the working class into a reliable leading class. From 1949 to late 1952, through a series of political movements, junior workers (qinggong), who had been professionally incompetent, were granted the identity of ‘activists’ and elevated to a politically superior position over senior workers (lao gongren). From late 1952, ho…

Editing Legitimacy
This research note is a textual comparison between different versions of Deng Xiaoping’s two speeches in May and June 1989 using recently accessible scanned copies of original documents distributed to local officials. It reveals numerous alterations—including both deletions and additions—in the later published texts. The research note suggests that in the context of the early 1990s, these editorial efforts were made to restore the legitimacy of t…
Exiting the Revolution
During the Cultural Revolution, many young people in Beijing exited the revolution by engaging in alternative ways of life. Echoing the fledgling tendency of reassessing the underlying meaning of youth subcultures in the Eastern Bloc, this article discusses the diverse mentalities behind these alternative lifestyles and challenges the traditional wisdom that regards youth subcultures as an easy form of everyday resistance to the regime. It also c…

The experiment group participated in a 12-week MBTP (40-min sessions per day, 5 …
Temporal Politics and the Collectivization of Young People’s Leisure Time in Early Maoist Beijing
Following the takeover of Beijing in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party started to provide public cultural goods for youth by organizing collective leisure activities, mostly on weekends and holidays. From 1953, the authorities took a more interventionist approach when they held collective leisure activities more often on an everyday basis after the Party realized that leisure was a field for Communist education. Although the Party expected youth …
