Four Case Studies in Comparison and Analogy: Political and Religious Culture, Conversion, Genealogy, and Time in Latin Europe and Medieval Japan
Our article follows two related objectives. We, first, reconsider the relationship between religion and politics by eschewing the uniform modern State–Church model and questioning its Eurocentric tenets. To do so, we focus on the Middle Ages and pair our decentring perspective with a comparison between Latin Europe in the 9th to 13th centuries and medieval Japan from the late Heian period to the Kamakura and early Muromachi eras (10th to 14th cen…
Oaths in Premodern Japan and Premodern Europe. An Introduction
This introduction to this collection of articles on oaths in premodern Japan and premodern Latin Europe aims merely to survey the data presented in the articles, and some comparativist findings. It considers terminology, chronology, avoidance of oath-taking, identity of oath-takers, diversity in formulas and practices of swearing, depending on hierarchy and situations, sanctions for perjury, and the efficiency (or not) of oaths
Introduction to premodern war and religions: Comparison, issues and results
Building and elaborating on the dossier’s five articles on East Africa, the Maghreb and Islamic Spain, Western Europe, the Aztec Mesoamerica, and the native American Northeast (plus Japanese and Byzantine history), this introduction discusses quandaries about comparison in the intertwined disciplines of History and Anthropology and suggests some hypotheses as to the relation between premodern warfare and religions. Side-switching was demonized (a…
Christianity's stamp: Of hybrids, traitors, false peace, massacres and other horrors
The contribution focuses on the ways in which medieval Catholic religion influenced warfare, not in terms of causality but in terms of conditions of possibility. After having looked at (1) the way in which the crusades, in particular, opened up the possibility to transfer attributes from monastic asceticism (the monks were spiritual ‘warriors of God’) to warriors (fighting as ‘warriors of God’), the article examines two examples. (2) Theology pro…
Religion, war, and peace in premodern Islamicate polities and the Christian West
The plural Islams and the various Christianities deriving from late Antique Catholicism constitute two families of monotheisms whose relation to armed violence and to peace can be compared over the longue durée. In both, war and peace coexist as values, with the sense however that there can be a corrupting bad peace and a wicked bad war. Both—albeit through different media—produced norms governing warfare. For both, there is a strong correlation …

One among many renegades: The Serb janissary Konstantin Mihailović and the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans
Konstantin Mihailović, a Serb born in Novo Brdo, was taken by the Ottomans and became a janissary in Mehmet II’s army. After he returned to the Christian side, he penned a report on Ottoman governance, religion, military structures and tactics. It explained by organisational advantages, fairness to subjects of all faiths coupled with deceit vis-à-vis enemies, divisions within Christendom, and providential history’s retributive measures, why the ‘…
Civil war and religion in medieval Japan and medieval Europe: War for the Gods, emotions at death and treason
To compare and contrast medieval Japan and medieval Western Europe allows one to discover three things. First, analogous to Catholic holy war, in Japan becomes visible a potential for war (albeit seldom actualised) for the sake, quite surprisingly, of Buddhism. Second, the different role played by emotions during war: in Europe, when vicious (and motivated by emotions such as greed, ambition or lust), they endanger the victors; thus the concern f…

Jews and Christians in Medieval Europe: The Historiographical Legacy of Bernhard Blumenkranz

Nicholas of Lyra: The Senses of Scripture
The first modern study of Nicholas of Lyra. A Franciscan teacher at the University of Paris, Nicholas (d. 1349) was an immensely important biblical commentator whose works influenced generations of scholars including Luther. Famed for his knowledge of Hebrew learning, as well as of the Latin Fathers, Nicholas was also highly conscious of interpretative method and of the Bible as literary artefact. In his massive Postillae, Nicholas commented on t…
Ritual and interpretation: The early medieval case
In dealing with early medieval ‘rituals’ (whatever this category may mean), historians have to take into account that they were written about, staged, and participated in by members of a culture that was steeped in interpretation, and especially by the exegetical dialectic between letter and spirit. The consequences for narrative techniques, and therefore for our approach to the sources depicting ‘rituals’ are plural. The narratives can heighten …
