  • Hippocampal neurons code individual episodic memories in humans

    Open Access•Luca D Kolibius, Frédéric Roux et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 42

The hippocampus is an essential hub for episodic memory processing. However, how human hippocampal single neurons code multi-element associations remains unknown. In particular, it is debated whether each hippocampal neuron represents an invariant element within an episode or whether single neurons bind together all the elements of a discrete episodic memory. Here we provide evidence for the latter hypothesis. Using single-neuron recordings from …

  • Circumpolar status of Arctic ptarmigan

    Open Access•Eva Fuglei, John-André Henden et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 36

Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) and willow ptarmigan (L. lagopus) are Arctic birds with a circumpolar distribution but there is limited knowledge about their status and trends across their circumpolar distribution. Here, we compiled information from 90 ptarmigan study sites from 7 Arctic countries, where almost half of the sites are still monitored. Rock ptarmigan showed an overall negative trend on Iceland and Greenland, while Svalbard and Newfoun…

  • Emotions and Mass Atrocity

Thomas Brudholm, Johannes Lang•BOOK•Emotions and Mass Atrocity•2018

  • New Histories of Emotion

    Open Access•Johannes Lang•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, there was a growing sense that historians had neglected the emotions and failed to think seriously about them. Since then, there has been explosive interest in the history of emotions. What precipitated this development? What has this focus on emotion added to our historical understanding, and what does a historical perspective contribute to research on emotion? Two recent books help us think about th…

  • Against obedience

    Open Access•Johannes Lang•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2014

This article explores the theoretical underpinnings and implications of a situationist social psychology of mass atrocity through a re-examination of Hannah Arendt’s work. The perception of a convergence between the views of Arendt, Stanley Milgram, and certain Holocaust historians inspired the situationist argument that ordinary people become mass murderers because they find themselves in circumstances that subvert their ability to make or act u…

  • Questioning Dehumanization

    Johannes Lang•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 4

Using the violence in Nazi concentration and death camps as its case study, this article explores the theoretical and empirical limits of the concept of dehumanization-the process by which the perpetrators come to perceive their victims as "not human" or "subhuman"-and delineates appropriate alternatives to the concept. The author argues that excessive violence is commonly misunderstood and misrepresented as dehumanization because it seems to aim…
