  • Collingwood on Spinoza and the Social-Political Role of Art

    Chinatsu Kobayashi, Mathieu Marion•ARTICLE•Human Affairs•2024•References: 12

We argue that the proper context for understanding Collingwood’s The Principles of Art is his claim that it has bearing “upon the condition of art in England in 1937”. We thus argue that he formulated a philosophical argument that underpins avant-garde dramatic poetry and theatrical practices (Eliot, Auden and the Group Theatre), taking his interpretation of Spinoza’s Ethics 5 prop. 3 to be the book’s central thesis: it is through art that one kn…

  • Gadamer y Collingwood sobre la distancia temporal y la comprensión

Open Access•Chinatsu Kobayashi, Manier Marion et al.•ARTICLE•Revista CS•2012

In this article, the authors explore an intuitive model of time worked through in Gadamer's hermeneutics, but which is rejected by Collingwood. To illustrate this, the authors examine the responses of both to the problem of transposition, upon which Dilthey's philosophy is purportedly founded. The authors then discuss the underlying notions of time, demonstrating that Ricoeur had a greater appreciation of the issue, given his observation that Col…

  • Gadamer and Collingwood on Temporal Distance and Understanding

Open Access•Chinatsu Kobayashi, Manier Marion et al.•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2011•Cited by: 1

In this paper, we begin by suggesting an intuitive model of time embodying a notion of temporal distance that we claim is at work in Gadamer's hermeneutics, while it is rejected in Collingwood's theory of interpretation. To show this, after a brief review of the influence of Collingwood on Gadamer and of their disagreement over the possibility of recovering an author's intention, we examine in turn their answers to the problem of transposition, u…
