    Open Access•Felix Wiedemann•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2026

  • Approaches to Arabic popular culture

Open Access•Peter Konerding, Felix Wiedemann et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Approaches to Arabic popular…•2021

Over recent years, Arabic popular culture has become a focal point of West Asian and North African studies. Most of the new research dealing with it concentrates on the ‘popular’ as opposed to an intellectual ‘high’ culture far from the harsh and hierarchically organized reality many Arabic-speaking societies face today. Popular cultural practices are thus seen as a rejection of the elite and a stance against those who have ‘something to loose’ w…

  • Migration and Narration

    Open Access•Felix Wiedemann•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2020

Historians’ interest in the history of human migrations is not limited to recent years. Migrations had already figured as explanatory factors in connection with cultural and historical change in the work of classical and ancient studies scholars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the writings of these scholars, migrations acted as historical landmarks or epochal thresholds and played a key role in the construction of geo‐his…

  • The Mediterranean Other - The other Mediterranean

Cristina Balma-Tivola, Julia Blandfort et al.•BOOK•The Mediterranean Other - The…•2019

Today, we particularly encounter the Mediterranean Other in the “refugee”. Scientific, political and public discourses on the Mediterranean are — continuously or most recently? — determined by hegemonial perspectives. Considering other perceptions, interpretations and representations seems to be impossible in light of financial crises, the new South, blurring borders and unclear securities. The contributions in this volume dispute this form of th…

  • The Local and the Global in Networks of Lebanese and Algerian Rappers

    Open Access•Felix Wiedemann•ARTICLE•Open Library of Humanities•2019

This article discusses border-crossing interconnections and processes of glocalization in Arab(ic) hip hop culture. It is based on an analysis of collaborative networks among Lebanese and Algerian rappers, and their Twitter networks. This approach is grounded in relational sociology, which assumes that culture is the product of interactions between individuals. Here, two interactions are modeled and analyzed as networks. At first, featurings as a…

  • The N orth, the Desert, and the Near E ast

    Open Access•Felix Wiedemann•ARTICLE•Studies in Ethnicity and…•2012•References: 6

The term ‘anti‐ S emitism’ indicates how far the anti‐ J ewish literature of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was charged with themes, figures, and stereotypes from contemporary discourses on the O rient. An increasing tendency to ‘orientalise’ the E uropean J ews had raised questions about the supposed origin of the J ewish people in the Near E ast and its relationship to other – current or historical – peoples. Focusing on the …

  • Der doppelte Orient Zur völkischen Orientromantik des Ludwig Ferdinand Clauß

    Felix Wiedemann•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Religions- und…•2009

One of the main topics of the völkisch racial scientist Ludwig Ferdinand Clauß was the racial cartography of the Orient. Based on older discussions in anti-Semitic literature, Clauß constructed a racially divided – double – Orient and made a sharp distinction between Arabs and Jews. His depiction largely follows patterns of ascription from Orientalist as well as anti-Semitic discourses. By doing so he draws attention to structural overlaps and di…
