Foucault on the origin of the world: Notes on “Phénoménologie et psychologie” (1953–1954)
In this essay, I explore what the manuscript Foucault wrote in 1953–1954, dedicated to the relationship, at least nominally, between phenomenology and psychology, tells us about the role classical phenomenology may have played in the genesis of his own distinctive historical methodology. His exploration of phenomenological methodology during this period reveals, I contend, one of the decisive keys to understanding the thought‐space ( Denkraum ) w…
Contra Teleology: Hegel on Subjective and Objective Purpose
Hegel's system is not teleological. For a philosophy to be teleological, as I shall use the term, means that it takes the basic nature of the world itself or any foundational account of that world to be defined ultimately by final causality. Such a view has, of course, long stood as the dominant model for interpreting Hegel's system. This essay argues, to the contrary, that the accounts of Teleology and Life in the Science of Logic , and more pre…
Safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZD1222) against Sars-CoV-2: An interim analysis of four randomised controlled trials in Brazil, South Africa, and the UK
Background A safe and efficacious vaccine against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), if deployed with high coverage, could contribute to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in a pooled interim analysis of four trials. Methods This analysis includes data from four ongoing blinded, randomised, controlled trials done across the UK, Brazil, and South Afri…
Reform, Abolition, Problematization
I would like to take the occasion of the publication of the English translation of the GIP archive to briefly gather some reflections and lessons on three axes of resistance for which the GIP has served, for me and I hope now for others, as an important point of intersection: reform, abolition, and problematization. My hope is that this distinctive archive will become a catalyst to spur further consideration of these and so many other axes for pr…

College Arrests and Later Criminal Convictions: An Examination of the Cumulative Disadvantage of Misconduct While in College
Crimes committed by college students have recently revealed some disturbing forms of misconduct. We know little however, about the sustained criminal behavior of this group in the decades following college. This study assesses whether being arrested while attending college is associated with an adult criminal conviction, 14–17 years following the college years. Data included a matched sample of non-arrested college students during the years 1996–…

Response to Colin Koopman’s “Historical Critique or Transcendental Critique in Foucault: Two Kantian Lineages”
In Historical Critique or Transcendental Critique in Foucault: Two Kantian Lineages *hereafter, HCTC+, Colin Koopman offers an important contribution to the on-going discussion of Foucault's historical methodology. His account takes its point of departure from a strident critique of recent efforts that have, in varying ways, sought to establish that Foucault's work is rooted in the transcendental phenomenological tradition. Koopman argues that th…
Historicity and Transcendentality: Foucault, Cavaillès, and the Phenomenology of the Concept
This paper is concerned with Foucault's historical methodology. It argues that the coherence of his project lies in its development of a set of tools for unearthing the historical principles that govern thought and practice in the epochs that have shaped the present age. Foucault claimed that these principles are, at once, transcendental and historical. Accordingly, the philosophical soundness of Foucault's project depends on his having developed…

What's Class Got to Do with It? A Further Examination of Power-Control Theory
In recent issues of this journal, J. Hagan, A. R. Gillis, and J. Simpson elaborate a power- control theory of common deliquency. They propose a positive relationship between neo-Marxist conceptions of class and common forms of delinquency, patterns of variation in gender differences by class, and intervening variables to explain these variations. An examination of class, gender, and delinquency in three U.S. data sets did not reveal the same patt…
Gender and Adolescent Drinking Problems: The Effects of Occupational Structure
This investigation uses a large, national sample of adolescent drinkers and an occupational indicator of class to determine whether gender effects on adolescent drinking problems are conditioned by parents' occupation. Findings show that gender differences in three indicators of drinking problems are largest among children whose parents are episodically or chronically unemployed. Gender ratios are smaller for children of workers, managers, and ow…
