The Effect of Fluid Availability on Consumption and Perceptual Measures during Aerobic Exercise
Fluid availability may alter drinking behavior; however, it is currently unknown if the availability of fluid impacts behavior and gastrointestinal issues (GI) that are often associated with increased fluid intake. The purpose of this study was to determine if ad libitum (AL) versus periodic (PER) fluid intake influences fluid consumption and GI distress during exercise in trained athletes. Male and female Division I NCAA Cross Country athletes (…

Effects of Acute Yohimbine Hydrochloride Supplementation on Repeated Supramaximal Sprint Performance
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a single acute dose of yohimbine hydrochloride on repeated anaerobic sprint ability. Physically active females ( n = 18) completed two separate repeated supramaximal sprint trials each with a different single-dose treatment: placebo (PL; gluten-free corn starch) or yohimbine hydrochloride (YHM; 2.5 mg). For each trial, participants consumed their respective treatment 20 min before exercise. …

Effects of Short-Term Golden Root Extract (Rhodiola rosea) Supplementation on Resistance Exercise Performance
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of short-term Golden Root Extract (GRE; Rhodiola rosea ) supplementation on blood lactate, catecholamines, and performance during repeated bench press exercise. Resistance-trained males ( n = 10) participated in this study. In a double-blinded, crossover, counterbalanced study design, participants supplemented with either 1500 mg/day of GRE or placebo (PL; gluten-free cornstarch) for 3 days pri…
Fluid Restriction Negatively Influences Perceived Morning Alertness and Visuomotor Ability
The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of two fluid intake protocols on alertness and reaction time before and after fluid intake. Healthy college-age males ( n = 12) followed two fluid intake protocols on separate occasions: (1) prescribed fluid (PF) and fluid restricted (FR). In PF, participants were instructed to consume 500 mL of fluid the night prior to and the morning of data collection. In FR, participants were instructed to re…
"Publishing" and Publics in a World Without Print: Vernacular Manuscripts in Early Modern India
How did one make a work ‘public’ in the world of pre-print South Asia? What are the textual and material aspects of manuscripts that alert us to their character as ‘published’ works intended to be circulated among members of an imagined readership removed from the author or scribe in space and time? Can such textual artifacts be systematically distinguished from copies intended primarily for the use of a single individual? This essay explores the…

“If the Whole World Were Paper…” a History of Writing in the North Indian Vernacular
The poetic and hagiographical works of early modern north Indian saints constitute a rich case study for understanding the relationship among changes in language, material practices of writing, and ideologies of writing. Beginning in the fourteenth century, the commitment of the vernacular language of bhāṣā to writing had the effect of reconfiguring practices and ideologies of writing, posing a serious challenge to the epistemic and cultural priv…
