Between the ‘Hand-Loom’ and the ‘Samson Stripper’: Fritz Schumacher's Struggle for Intermediate Technology
For twenty years, during which time he started to promote Intermediate Technology abroad and began writing Small is Beautiful (1973), E. F. Schumacher was an economist with the National Coal Board. As such, he led what he called a ‘double-life’. On the one hand, his work at the coal board involved colossal plant, pollution and brute human labour, the difficulty of which could be alleviated only by the adoption of heavy coal-extracting machinery. …
« The Proper Use of Land ». E.F. Schumacher on Economics and the Environment, 1930-1977

E. F. Schumacher and Intermediate Technology
E. F. Multivariate analysis of febrile neutropenia occurrence in patients with non‐Hodgkin lymphoma: Data from the INC‐EU Prospective Observational European Neutropenia Study
Myelosuppression, particularly febrile neutropenia (FN), are serious dose‐limiting toxicities that occur frequently during the first cycle of chemotherapy. Identifying patients most at risk of developing FN might help physicians to target prophylactic treatment with colony‐stimulating factor (CSF), in order to decrease the incidence, or duration, of myelosuppression and facilitate delivery of chemotherapy as planned. We present a risk model for F…
“Between Worlds,” or an Imagined Reminiscence by Oskar Morgenstern about Equilibrium and Mathematics in the 1920s
“Iwas born in 1902 in Görlitz, a small provincial town in Germany, and raised in Vienna, the great city of the multinational Austro-Hungarian empire. Ethics and the Excluded Middle: Karl Menger and Social Science in Interwar Vienna
For over a decade, before he fled to the United States in 1937, the Viennese mathematician Karl Menger (1902-1985) was both a participant in the discussions of the Vienna Circle, with Hahn, Schlick, Neurath, and Carnap, and an important presence in Viennese social scientific circles. His writings span pure mathematics, the philosophy of mathematics, ethics, and economics, and his work on the last two marked a turn toward abstraction in social the…
Reading Cournot, Reading Nash: The Creation and Stabilisation of the Nash Equilibrium
The concept of the Cournot-Nash equilibrium is central to noncooperative game theory and the latter's use in microeconomic theory. This paper considers the creation of this theoretical construct, examining the separate contributions of both Cournot and Nash, and showing how the two were ultimately joined together in the eyes of contemporary economic theorists. Rather than simply show how Cournot served as a precursor to Nash, we challenge the tra…

Social Psychology in Natural Settings: A Reader in Field Experimentation
The study of human behavior in actual social settings is an extraordinarily complex area of research. Social behavior, unlike the controlled conditions of the laboratory, is affected by an enormous number of variables and environments. Researchers, therefore, are faced with the task of designing adequate experiments that have the sophisticated controls necessary to increase the experimenter's confidence that a relationship between a particular st…
