On the idea of progress
This paper deals with the debate which pitted conservative economists against their progressive rivals during the late 19th century and early 20th century. It provides a framework to capture opposition to progress, which suggests that the lines separating the two sides were not clearly delineated. We argue that economists' abilities to implement a “program for action” should be considered to derive a more complete understanding of what progress e…
Controversies on the concept of progress in Progressive Era American Economics
This symposium explores the concept of “progress” and its economic achievements in Progressive Era American economics (1890–1920). This period of deep upheavals in American society was characterized by controversies on the concept of progress among the economics profession. The contributions help understand the extent to which these controversies participated in shaping Progressive Era American economics as well in framing public policies

L'Economie institutionnelle
It is no easy thing to tackle the thought of any "sacred monster" in academia, especially when it is elaborate and inaccessible outside of its original language.Yet, such is the challenge taken up by two renowned French-speaking institutionalists, Jean-Jacques Gislain and Bruno Thret, who have published a French translation of John Rogers Commons's Institutional Economics, both his "magnus opus" (1597) and one that was not well received at the ti…

Rebuilding the economy of the home – for the emergence of the “new woman”
In the closing years of the nineteenth century in the United States, Charlotte Perkins Gilman emphasised the connection between the rules governing the socio-economic institutions of her time and those of home economics. She called for radical transformations of the economy of the home as a way of promoting the “new woman” which would reduce social tensions and improve the economy. Gilman’s most valuable contribution to economics was that she per…

The Societal Responsibility of Banks
The ‘Great Recession’ of 2008 exposed banks and banking systems as frail economic entities, posing a threat to the real economy and society at large. This context of near economic collapse made clear the societal responsibility of banks to conform to business ethics respectful of both individual and collective interests. We argue that banks are primarily institutions of capitalism that must rely on resilient systems of reasonable values. The pape…
The Rise and Fall of Two Outstanding Progressives of American Social Sciences (1880s–1930s)
This article examines why the ideas and methods pioneered by R.T. Ely and A.W. Small did not take long-term root between 1880 and 1930, at a time when both scholars were at the forefront of American social sciences. They experienced a gradual decline in the production of academic ideas, which prevented them from remaining ‘moral entrepreneurs’ within their field. By analyzing the evolution of the support (intellectual, relational and institutiona…

“Put your Heart/Body into it”: a Psycho-Physiological Approach of the Embodied Cognition. Cognition is rooted in the body according to embodied cognition view. Research within this approach has studied the body primarily under the scope of motricity (e. g. effect of gesture, posture). Studies in the field of psychophysiology have investigated the role of physiological variables in the functioning of the central nervous system without proposing an…

Inequalities and the Progressive Era
Inequalities and the Progressive Era features contributors from all corners of the world, each exploring a different type of inequality during the ‘Progressive Era’ (1890s-1930s). Though this era is most associated with the United States, it corresponds to a historical period in which profound changes and progress are realized or expected all over the globe.
The relationship between nuclear energy consumption and economic growth
This study aims to investigate the relationship between nuclear energy consumption and economic growth in Switzerland over the period 1970–2018. We use data on capital, labour, and exports within a multivariate framework. Starting from the consideration that Switzerland has decided to phase out nuclear energy by 2034, we examine the effect of this structural economic-energy change in the country. To do so, two distinct estimation tools are perfor…

This is a Man’s world

The gendered economics of bodybuilding
This article sheds light on the gendered economics of bodybuilding, a topic that, to my knowledge, has not previously been studied. First displaying its history, it examines how the economy of such a sport was born, focusing on the principles and values of capitalism and then creating the ‘bodybuilding’s industry’. In particular, the article stresses the gendered dimension of such an industry relying on ‘hegemonic masculinity’, especially through…

Cooperation rather than competition in industrial organisations
This article aims to present Albion W. Small’s underestimated view on labour relations in industrial organisations. A century ago, this sociologist, who also had a grounding in political economy, analysed the transformation of capitalism through a focus on the relationship between workers and capitalists. He offered some interesting proposals, stressing the need for the two factors of production to cooperate instead of competing. His approach may…

Think twice
This paper seeks to demonstrate to what extent an academic approach that borrows from economics and sociology is heuristic in terms of fully understanding monetary issues. Contrary to authors that consider money to be neutral, this article emphasizes that money is a ‘total social fact’. Hence, it focuses on three meanings of money through the theoretical framework of Schumpeter and various French institutionalists. It also focuses on the Swiss ca…

The Neglected Roots of Switzerland's National Economy
The article aims to identify the role of peasantry in the Swiss national production system and in the Swiss society in general. There is an evident paradox when considering the peasantry in Switzerland: though its economic power has been decreasing over time, its political power remains. The author uses the archival data to resolve this paradox and prove the key role of the Swiss peasantry in Switzerland from the historical and institutional pers…
