For a Critique of Economic Policy
The Economic Thought in the Counter-Reformation Age
Although the centrality of the works of Giovanni Botero in the political literature of the first half of the seventeenth century is widely recognized, the role that the former Jesuit had in the economic thought of the Catholic Counter-Reformation has not yet been sufficiently analyzed. In fact, Botero’s works reveal that the existence of a mentality favorable to the development of productive and commercial activities was present and widespread ev…
International clearing system as alternative monetary order
The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the debate on the international clearing mechanism from the pioneering proposals of the nineteenth century to the years of high theory, at the beginning of the 1940s, when several plans were defined to establish international clearing mechanisms, and the well-known John Maynard Keynes’s International Clearing Union Plan was joined by other projects proposed by Paul Einzig and two German-born economists,…
Ferdinando Galiani’s Newtonian Social Mathematics
The evolution of Ferdinando Galiani’s thought toward social mathematic has been neglected by scholars, and his attempt to establish political arguments on the analytical basis remains unexplored. The non-systematic nature of Galiani’s intuitions, due to his laziness, largely justifies this underestimation of his scientific program. This paper intends to show that the mature abbé Galiani follows an intellectual itinerary autonomous and parallel to…
The Italian economic stagnation in a Kaldorian theoretical perspective
Marx on Public Debt
Marx devoted little attention to the functions of the State (and, particularly, to the role of public debt) in the capitalist system, and in more recent times, little attention has been devoted to this issue on the part of Marxist scholars. Starting from a reconstruction of Marx’s view on this issue, this article aims to analyze the effects of the expansion of public debt on capital reproduction in Marx’s thought and to derive a criterion of publ…
Geometry of Money in the Neapolitan Eighteenth Century
In the 1750s, in the Italian states, the theme of monetary stability came to the center of public interest. In the Kingdom of Naples, particularly, the independence achieved under Charles of Bourbon stimulated many reform programs for the development and protection of foreign trade through direct political support. A prerequisite for this mercantilist perspective was monetary stabilization, since a weak and instable currency was the main obstacle…
Economists and War
The paper analyzes and compares the reflection on World War proposal by two essential economists in the history of Italian economic thought: Achille Loria and Maffeo Pantaleoni. Loria, in the name of an original interpretation of Marx's thought, Pantaleoni, in the name of an equally original use of marginalist logic, propose radically different analysis of the origins and of the economic and social consequences of the conflict. Even politically t…
The Keynesian Features of Graziani's Monetary Theory of Production and Some Unresolved Issues
The aim of this article is twofold. First, it seeks to verify the elements of affinity between Graziani's approach to the Monetary Theory of Production and Keynes' Treatise on Money and his General Theory. It is shown that two important theoretical elements, from the Treatise on Money, enter Graziani's basic schema, namely the view of endogenous money supply and the distribution process. At the same time, uncertainty and aggregate demand--conceiv…
The Legacy of Mathématique Sociale in Italy and Ricardian Economics
This article discusses the contribution made by Francesco Fuoco (1774-1841) to the methodological debate in the early nineteenth century. In opposition to Say's view, Fuoco defended the validity of the deductive method in economic analysis, upholding the mathématique sociale tradition. This perspective characterizes his main work, Saggi economici (1825-27), in which he expounded a systematic view of economic theory and synthesized, within the fra…
