  • Observations Beyond the 2-Year Impact Window

    Open Access•José Edwards, Stephen Meardon•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2021•References: 1

In 2018, Clarivate Analytics, publisher of the Web of Science Journal Citation Reports (JCR), suppressed publication of the 2017 Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for three of the four journals that it then indexed in the academic field of history of economics. Clarivate judged one of the journals, History of Economic Ideas (HEI), to be the “donor” of citations that distorted the impact factors of the European Journal of the History of Economic Thought…

  • Keep Calm and Cite Better: Impact Factor Pressures and Review Articles in the History of Economics

    Open Access•Erich Pinzón-Fuchs, Cléo Chassonnery-Zaïgouche et al.•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2021•References: 11

Clarivate Analytics’ suppression of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for three history of economics journals in 2018 resulted from the publication of a single review article solicited for History of Economic Ideas (HEI). That episode highlights several connections between JIF pressures on authors and editors, on the practice of writing review articles, and on the field of history of economics. We examine the different roles and proliferation of re…

  • Fifty Years of Hope

    José Edwards•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 26

Fifty years past A. W. Coats's (1969) "Research Priorities in the History of Economics"-the first article in History of Political Economy (HOPE)-the opportunity arises to check how such priorities have changed over time. Drawing from the 3,084 documents published in HOPE volumes 1-50, this survey analyzes a series of elements within the HOPE literature set, and those related to the broader historiography of economics (i.e., including not only pub…

  • Behaviorism and Control in the History of Economics and Psychology

    José Edwards•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 63

There is a misunderstanding about the meaning of behaviorism in recent discussions on the history of economics and psychology. This essay explores that "behaviorist myth" by highlighting the role of "control" as defined by behaviorists and contrasting their views against those of economists. It then uses "control as a viewpoint" from which to study the history of the two disciplines. It reveals why behaviorism did not meet consumer demand theory …

  • Observing Attitudes, Intentions, and Expectations (1945-73)

    José M Edwards, José Edwards•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Although involved in projects of influential institutions like the Cowles Commission, the NBER, and the Michigan Survey Research Center, George Katona, the "pioneer student and chief collector of consumer anticipations data" (Tobin 1959, 1), is virtually absent from accounts of the topics he worked on, including the study of aggregate consumption and the development of behavioral economics. This essay argues that such an absence is partly explain…
