  • J. M. Keynes' Decision Theory, a Technical Note

    Open Access•Michael Emmett Brady•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

It is demonstrated mathematically that both the expected monetary value and linear, risk-neutral, subjective, expected utility rules are special cases of J. M. Keynes' weighted monetary value rule

  • A Note on the Extension of J. M. Keynes' Decision Theory

    Open Access•Michael Emmett Brady•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

It is a simple and straightforward matter to adjust the weights used in Keynes' decision theory to model risk and ambiguity aversion also to model preference for risk and ambiguity. Once these modifications are made, Keynes' theory is complete, as it covers all possible cases

  • A theoretical analysis of the environmental effects of lead contamination over time on IQ, education and crime in America

    Michael Emmett Brady•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1993

Lead poisoning and contamination is a major factor which partly explains why racial minorities in the U.S.A. have lower than average IQ's, social mobility, educational success and economic prosperity. When combined with the factors of low birth weight and childhood neglect/physical abuse, higher minority crime rates are partially explained. The major conclusion is that government war on poverty/economic education and opportunity programs for mino…

Michael Emmett Brady•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 31

  • Theoretical Comparison of the Decision Theories of J. M. Keynes, Kahneman-Tversky, and Einhorn-Hogarth

    Open Access•Michael Emmett Brady, Howard B Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

It is demonstrated that J. M. Keynes in 1921 provided a complete decision rule that handles both the cases of nonlinear probability preferences and ambiguity or uncertainty. The 1979 Kahneman-Tversky approach deals only with risk (nonlinear probability preferences) and does not specify a decision rule. The 1985–1986 Einhorn-Hogarth anchoring and adjustment rule deals only with ambiguity or uncertainty and not risk. Only Keynes' rule does both

  • The role of risk assessment and the rate of discount in benefit‐cost analysis

    Michael Emmett Brady•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1990

Current theoretical and applied work in energy analysis, which uses a benefit‐cost rate of discount approach, does not properly take into account the significant differences in the risks of the different energy alternatives, whenever energy alternatives are evaluated from a long run, sustainability framework. A simple variational calculus model is developed to enable an energy or environmental planner to incorporate nonsustainable, irreversible r…

  • Stability and sustainability of modern chemical farming

    Michael Emmett Brady•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1989

It is demonstrated that modern farming techniques, based on a short‐run, profit maximizing economic approach, using an array of artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, is dynamically unstable and unsustainable. The result is the erosion of top soil which can't be regenerated, substituted for or recycled once lost, since its development over geological time required hundreds of thousands of years

  • Is There an Ellsberg-Fellner Paradox? A Note on its Resolution

    Open Access•Michael Emmett Brady, Howard B Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

The Ellsberg-Fellner Paradox can be shown to be nonparadoxical if Keynes' concept of weight-of-evidence is incorporated in decision making under risk and/or uncertainty. Keynes' concept is a more advanced version of C. S. Peirce's “second number” approach and is identical to R. Carnap's reliability-unreliability index. The Ellsberg-Fellner Paradox is paradoxical only to decision theorists who accept the Von Neumann-Morgenstern-Savage axioms. Deci…

  • Is There an Allais Paradox? A Note on its Resolution

    Open Access•Michael Emmett Brady, Howard B Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

If a decision maker uses J. M. Keynes' “conventional coefficient of risk and weight” in making decisions under conditions of risk and/or uncertainty, then a consistent pattern of ranked outcome results is not paradoxical as proposed by Allais. Similarly, the paradoxical aspects of the “reflection effect” in Kahneman and Tversky's Prospect Theory analysis of the Allais' paradox, also vanishes. The Allais Paradox can only exist when probabilities a…

  • Dynamics of Choice Behavior

    Open Access•Michael Emmett Brady, Howard B Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

In choice behavior, researchers have noticed that humans have a preference for some probabilities, Most researchers in the past 40 yr. have been unable to account for the nonlinearity of this behavior. The convex shape of nonlinear subjective probabilities has been experimentally confirmed by every investigator from Preston and Baratta through Edwards, Handa, and Kahneman and Tversky. What has been lacking is a clear analysis of why the probabili…
