Whose Interest? Conflicts with the Invisible Hand
Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations is often associated with the idea that in markets individuals’ interests are led by an invisible hand that unintentionally promotes society's interest. Yet, Smith not only qualifies the conditions under which the invisible hand can align individual interests with society's interest, but he also distinguishes between different interests. This distinction among different interests allows him to show that interests can…
The History of Economics Society at 50
As we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the History of Economics Society (HES), this issue of the Journal of the History of Economic Thought marks a significant milestone. The journal, as the official publication of the society, seeks to participate in commemorating this important occasion and acknowledging the society’s substantial contributions to the scholarly community over the past five decades. The society’s efforts have not only advanc…

Where is the Labor Theory of Value in Adam Smith? Adam Smith’s Value Theory Revisited
Commentators often follow David Ricardo in looking, especially, at chapters V and VI of Book I of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations as the place to find his theory of value. And most commentators attribute to Adam Smith some versions of a labor theory of value. But in those chapters, Smith is looking for a stable unit of measurement of value and the reservation price of bringing goods to market. We thus suggest that the labor theory of value in Smit…
Introduction to Symposium
“I have not the least doubt of it for you have made it of bread and butter instead of tea,” said Mr. Damer when Adam Smith, whom he was visiting that morning, declared “it was the worst tea he had ever met with” (Rae 1895, p. 238). The year 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of Smith, this absent-minded and introverted thinker, who enjoyed long solitary walks by the seaside more than anything else, was a fervent admirer of Voltaire, and became a fa…
Understanding the Effects of Journal Impact Factors on the Publishing Behavior of Historians of Economics
Through a survey, conducted in early 2019, we try to assess the consequences of impact factors on the scholarly practices of the community of historians of economics and economic thought. This first systematic glance on the possible impact of these metrics on the scholarly community shows that they are considered as a limited source of information about the quality and originality of articles but they show the centrality and visibility of a journ…
The Quarrel of Policy Advisers That Became Development Experts
Lauchlin Currie and Albert O. Hirschman worked together as advisers to the National Planning Council in Colombia in the 1950s. Both had little experience in development economics when they arrived, and did not see eye to eye about the functioning and policy recommendations of the council. Retracing their debates on internal and public issues using archival sources shows how the Colombian experience marked their views on the role of policy adviser…
Lauchlin Currie and Albert O. Hirschman on Development as a Problem of Decision Making
This paper analyzes L. Currie and A. O. Hirschman’s contributions to development economics in the context of their Colombian experience as foreign experts. We show that the common ideas about the divergences between these authors have overlooked the view they shared of the experts’ role as a triggering factor in development strategy. They both believed experts should facilitate and guide the decision-making process. Using published and archival s…
La formación de una tecnocracia pragmática
The initial years of the Economics Department and the Center for the Study of Development Economics at Universidad de los Andes are an exemplary case of the beginnings of the formation of professional economists in Colombia. Through archival research we reconstruct the first twenty years of this project that counted with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation and answered to the increasing demand for professional economists capable of producin…
The First Social Scientist
Will we ever speak about Elster’s Tocqueville as we are used to speak about Skidelsky’s Keynes, Winch’s Smith, Hollander’s Ricardo or ... Elster’s Marx? Following his lifelong research, Jon Elster presents in this book the political and social thinker that he regards not only as his predecessor, but also, as the title of the book indicates, as the first social scientist: Alexis de Tocqueville. Elster recognizes how contestable this claim of being…
